The way to work it out is to jack it up, spin the wheels and see where it is coming from.

Good bodywork on a mk1 is the holy grail, so if you've found a good one...keep it. Good engines are ten a penny.

Depending whether you would do the work yourself, it is going to be much cheaper to get a used engine and drop it in than to overhaul the current one. If you're handy and enjoy that sort of thing then a rebuild might be worthwhile for the fun of it...but a used engine will be better value financiall...
