MK1 Door Wont Open

A fairly common problem MX5 owners find is that one of their doors will fail to open. Try all you like with wither the interior door handle or exterior and it will still not open.

Don't worry, there is a solution.

  1. Start by entering the car from the side that does open
  2. Drop the hood and lower the window of the broken door
  3. Unscrew the fittings on the interior door panel. This includes grab handles, door opening handle, etc.
  4. Start pulling the door card from the bottom to release the poppers. You will come across one which you can not get because the dashboard is in the way.
  5. Wiggle the door card from the bottom at the same time as pulling up. This will free the door card from the remaining popper and allow you to remove the door panel.
  6. Pull back the clear plastic waterproofing membrane.
  7. Bring the window back up. You should now be able to see the door latch mechanism and should also be able pop the door open.
  8. On the main latch mechanism you will find there is a spring that has snapped or is missing. These can not be bought separately from Mazda as they are only sold as part of the locking mechanism. This mechanism will need replacing.
  9. Once replaced, refit the door panel and fittings
