Roof Leaking

90% of leaking mx5 soft tops can be cures with one very simple replacement part, the plastic catch cap.

Water creeps in through cracks in these and will fill up the seals. Once the seal gets over full it will leak straight into the car, usually all over the seat or the footwell (a huge cause of ECU failure).

Replacing these caps if they look cracked or are missing is vital.

Heres how:

  • Time Required: 10 mins
  • Skill level: Beginner

What you need:

  • Cross head screwdriver (the one in the toolkit is ideal)
  • 2 replacement caps - Available here

The Guide:

  1. First check the condition of your catches by unclipping the roof and folding it down half way. Inspect the end as pictured below, and if it looks like the one below or the plastic end cap is completely missing (very common) then continue with the how to, else if your caps look good, then your leak is probably something else.

  1. Start by unscrewing the catch from the soft top frame. There are 3 screws on each catch that need removing. One of them can only be got at if the catch is in the open position.

  1. Turn the catch over and on the back you will see one small screw holding the cap on (or the remains of the cap if any). Unscrew this, remove the remains of the cap.

  1. Slip the new cap on and replace the screw. Do not over tighten as you run the risk of cracking the new cap. It only needs to be nipped up.
  2. Now you can put the catch back onto the roof frame, replacing the 3 bolts on each side
  3. If it has all gone well, the end of your catch should now look like this, and hopefully the leak will have stopped.
