California Clutch change

Postby Jetmech » Tue Feb 27, 2018 6:19 pm

Since buyiing the MX5 back in 2015 it has had a tendency to suffer a bit of clutch slip when hot, nothing too bad, but with the current weather preventing me from doing outside jobs I decided to tackle the clutch.
Over the last couple of afternoons I have made good progress and now have it in pieces!

As you can see the plate is worn to the bottom of the grooves.
The slave cylinder was leaking a bit and you can see why! Not worth saving I think.

I also managed to extract the spigot bearing without removing the flywheel.

Whilst there is no play in them, the UJ’s on the prop shaft are a bit notchy . Is this fairly normal? They don’t look as if they are replaceable.
Time for some online shopping! :-D

Some progress today, new spigot bearing ,clutch and clutch release bearing all fitted.
Waiting for a stud extraction tool to arrive from Amazon as I need to replace one of the exhaust down pipe studs from the manifold and I think it will be easier with the gearbox out.

Is there a knack to bleeding the clutch?
I cannot get any fluid down to the slave cylinder, have tried pumping the pedal, suction on the pipe at the slave cylinder end and pressurising the reservoir with an easy bleed, without any success.

Not saying this will work but generally we completely remove the nipple and let gravity have a go first making sure the resovoir is full. If that fails we have a pressure bleed kit that sucks the fluid through.
When bleeding using the pedal, ideally you want someone to slowly to operate the pedal nice and slowly , let up up and give it a couple of seconds before repeating the process, did my mates a while back and thats how we did it.

We use a fluid extractor, makes it a one man operation easier and quicker and pulls all the air out,,,it will also come in handy for many many other uses, brakes ,PS, water , oil change and even in the house etc and not expensive...

Ok thanks, I’ve been thinking of investing in one of those for a while so perhaps now is the time.

Had a bad day with this job yesterday, could not remove the stripped exhaust manifold stud even with heat and a stud extractor, even dropped the subframe for better access. In the end gave up , refitted subframe and installed gearbox.
Today I removed the exhaust manifold from the engine and drilled the stud, took about 10 minutes to remove the stud on the bench!
Off to work now, will continue fitting everything back tomorrow, replacement manifold heat shield and bolts ordered.

I hope I don't experience any stud related problems as and when I get round to swapping out the old for a new stainless manifold??

Keep the updates coming.

Finally finished this job today. The clutch bleeding issue turned out to be a split seal in the master cylinder. Once a genuine Mazda repair kit was fitted it bled normally. Had a quick test drive on the access road in front of our house and all seems well. It will be off the SORN in a couple of weeks, then I will know for sure.
There is still an unidentified knocking at the rear end to find and fix.
