I have had a lot of interest on how I do my engine bay cleans with out taking days and removing everything, couple of hours at most, there really is not that much you will need
1 x 5 Ltrs of mazdamenders Jiza clean, of Which there are three different types...., ( average 2.5 ltrs a bay jiza clean, 1.5 ltrs super jiza ,and 1.5 ltrs of smeels rit nice jiza)
1 x 750cl/1Ltr spray bottle,
1 x tin of silicon lube spray.
1 x selection of brushes,
1 x large bin bag or plastic sheet,
12mm spanner/socket and ratchet,
1 x hose pipe on low trickle pressure,
1 x roll of rags or large syringe tool,
1 x spark plug wrench,
1 x pair of protective glasses,
1 x pair of protective gloves,
1 x good dry warm'ish day ( remember those) this should take a couple of hrs tops, but there are no medals for rushing doing this.
and the phone switched off.......
The mix of the mazdamenders Jiza clean all depends on how bad the bay is, if it is really stuck on dirt, then leave it neat, never let it go dry regardless of the mix, once the deep clean as been done, there will not be any need to go this hard and deep again, you will only need to use your favourite wash and wax after this to stay on top of it, but once dry the barrier and lube must be applied again, because this cleaner is caustic based there must be care and the right precautions taken when using this, eye protection and gloves are a must, if you use it in a safe manner then it will be safe procedure, ( I strongly do not recommend this for polished rockers or inlets etc, the product will mark it as it is a aggressive cleaner).
It is recommend to remove the coil pack when doing this, but it can be done with the coil packs in situ as long as you take care, more on this later, make sure you have a camera handy for when you finish as you WILL want to take pictures 100%, if you can get her on a slant backwards even better, and no jet washers, they are to powerful for this job.
So you will need.....
And a dirty engine bay.....

What you put in, you'll get back ten fold

Re: Engine bay clean with mazdamenders Jiza clean....
Page 2
Depending on how badly soiled the engine bay it is all down the the mix in the spray bottle, if it is heavily soiled then leave it neat to break down the dirt, 50/50 mix if it is not to bad and a 25/75 mix if it a brush over or to remove brake dust off rims.
Now remember this is a chemical and care must be taken in use, wear the correct protective PPE (Personal Protective Equipment ) as stated in the first section of this guide which is important because as a cleaner it is aggressive in neat form, and if not used by following the directions it can give problems unless used in the correct way just like any chemical.
This product is caustic based so will attack alloy, this is the reason to use it correctly to bring everything up clean again, when this deep clean is done you will never need to go this deep again, once is enough.
Hose pipe needs to be set on trickle, no jet washers or on full blast, once the clean has been finished, rinsed and everything is dry you will need to protect everything again as the cleaner will remove everything , so the silicon spray acts as a protector, lube and neutralizer all in one....
As said in the first section we do recommend removing the coil packs, but can be done in situ with great care...fill the spray bottle, the Jiza will break down the crap, the brushes are just to agitate the soiling, there is no need to scrub hard and try and remove paint, some use paint brushes for this.
Under the bonnet first....
Put the plastic sheet over the engine etc to catch the water and Jiza from hitting the coil pack etc, apply the Jiza straight from the spray bottle to the underneath of the bonnet....dry, no need to wet it before using the Jiza and there are no points for speed when doing this, if it needs another going over, then hit it again until your a happy bunny, there is no science to this but working from the top down works for me and one side then the other ..
Once finished remove the plastic sheet ( there will be water and Jiza in/on it so be careful ) do not do anything else with the underneath of the bonnet just yet let it dry, we'll come back to that later.

Re: Engine bay clean with mazdamenders Jiza clean....
Page 3
Now we can start on the engine bay, engine and add ons...
Mix is as the last page again, start with the drivers side or passenger inner wing moving to the front and back to the inner wing in a horse shoe, then the engine etc.
If it is a MK 1 then hit the head light service button with the hazard switch ,you will need them up for this, as stated we do recommend removing the coil pack and have the car on a slant backwards to help the water and Jiza run away freely , it can be done with the packs in place but great care must be taken and set the hose pipe to trickle only not blast the hell out of it in a Jeremy Clarkson fashion, it will do no good....
Start off with the skuttle, a old tooth brush will also come in handy here for under the plastic trim and round the hinges...

Re: Engine bay clean with mazdamenders Jiza clean....
Page 4
Now into the engine bay......
Like I said early start at one of the inner wings and work around in a horse show, take your time, there are no points for rushing...
Spray the Jiza on first to start attacking the crud, then give it a nudge with a brush of your choice...
And rinse off ( set at trickle)....
Then move to under the light and complete light unit etc, get the Jiza on and give it a push....
Rinse off...
Now the slam panel, Fan(don't forget the blades to) and all surrounding bits, you can do the two head lights on a MK 1 and the slam panel at the same time, personal choice....
And rinse off when happy...
Other head light, underneath and the complete light unit also...
And rinse off....
Now you can start on the inner wing, all the bits, and fire wall, apply the Jiza and nudge it with a brush etc of choice, at this point you can also apply it to the body of the AFM on the 1.6 MK 1's to start attacking the fixed deep crud, but more on this later...
Rinse off when happy....

Re: Engine bay clean with mazdamenders Jiza clean....
Page 5
Now we can move to the AFM ( on the MK 1 1.6) side of the engine and heat shield, you think it has knocked the dirt of easy with no effort at the minute, now watch it do it's stuff and watch the Jiza fizz.....
Never leave this stuff to dry off on the roadster without rinsing it off, don't walk away and leave it be you need to watch this stuff, it is a chemical and if used incorrectly it will cause problems...
Apply the Jiza to the AFM (MK 1 1.6 only is alloy) and onto the side of the engine, heat shield, P/S pump, A/C pump if you have it etc, nudge it with the brush etc of choice, spread it evenly over the stuff we are attacking, the first covering will not do much as it starts to attack but you will see the crud start to move, rinse off and apply again, you may need to repeat 3 or 4 times to get it all off, if it becomes 5 or 6 then so be it but I personally have never needed to go that long, what you are looking for is a even white fizz across what ever it is you are cleaning/attacking, once you get that even fizz it as done the job and removed the in-bedded crud, rinse off and move onto the next section of attack, don't forget all the bits at the bottom while we are doing this and if need be the underneath of item which can be just worked in by hand, make sure those gloves are on, as this stuff loves a good cut to clean..
As you can see from the pics, I am doing the side and front etc, but I am a dab hand at this and have it down to a fine art, I recommend doing one section at a time for best results when doing this for the first time, as I have said there are no points for rushing...

Re: Engine bay clean with mazdamenders Jiza clean....
Page 6..
Now onto the inlet/throttle body, time to see more fizz from the Jiz as it attacks and cleans the alloy .
Spray on neat onto the full inlet and throttle, back, front, bottom, underneath, support, where the injectors are,,,,everywhere, even on the alternator at this point if not all ready done.
The process is the same as the 1.6 AFM if you have one, first covering of Jiza will not really do much, give it a nudge with the brush and spread it evenly, rinse off and re apply, this might take up to 3 to 4 times before you get the result needed which is a full even white fizzing, once you get to that stage it is done, rinse off and let it dry off....
First attack....
At this point you can start on the front of the rocker cover too, and do the same, apply, nudge and spread evenly...
Rinse off and apply again......
Now you can make a start on the rocker cover too, spray it on the front as instructed above and and the rest of the rocker cover, apply evenly and brush to spread evenly over the whole cover, keep an eye on the inlet/throttle if you do them at the same time, you will note that the HT leads and coil pack is still in place, If you do it this way great care most be taken with water and the pack, and the rinse/water most be on trickle, and the roadster on a slant backwards to help with the water to run offin a safe manner. I do recommend removing the pack to be on the safe side as they can be an expensive unit to replace if you fudge it, the spark plugs wells WILL get water in there regardless, more on that later.....
Recover and rinse off, we are looking for a nice even covereing of a white fizz all over, once this is achieved after 3 to 4 coverings, finally rinse off and leave it all to dry off....

Re: Engine bay clean with mazdamenders Jiza clean....
Page 7..
Ok so now it is all clean and dry, if you have removed the coil pack then it is time to re bolt it back on, if you did not remove it then pull the HT leads off the spark plugs in the wells ( dry the HT leads off), now this is for both cases regardless of removing or leaving the coil packs attached.
There will be water in the spark plug wells and this needs to be sucked out, a large syringe or turky baster will do, remove as much as you can, you will not get it all, once you are happy that you have removed as much as you can remove the plugs one at a time and let the last little bits of water if there is any just fall into the engine, dry the spark plug if needed, apply a thin wipe of copper slip to the spark plug thread and re fit it , move onto the next plug and repeat until you have done this to all four, refit the pack/HT leads.
You will now need a tin of spray silicon lube, the reason we use silicon spray is for a number of reasons...
1) JIzza is an aggressive cleaner so removes everything therefore the silicon spray re lubricates and seeps into every nook and cranny.
2) Because Jizza is an aggressive cleaner it can remove some goodness from old plastics, the silicon spray will put the goodness back in.
3) The silicon spray will also act as a protection layer as it soaks in, which after a deep clean once sprayed on it most be left on for 2 weeks or so while being used so it works in, after that the access can be wiped off if wished.
4) It acts as a neutralizer to the caustic cleaner.
Make sure you spray everything including the wipers, underneath of the bonnet, hinges etc..
The silicon spray....
(This is no longer available, they have changed the formula which as more additives in than silicon, so hellfrouds brand is no good for this any more)
Applying.....
And all finished, stand back and look what you have done and pat yourself on the back, show her off ....
Once you have it to this stage, you will not need to go this deep again, it will just be a case of wiping the dust off and using your chosen wash and wax, let it dry and spray the whole thing with a covering of silicon lube spray, personally I do a clean just before good old Britain spread the solver of winter on our roads and coat with the silicon so it acts as a barrier, when we come on out on the other side of spring, a quick wipe down of the car and all good .
My thanks to Ian Flaming from the Mx-5 owners club UK for giving us his MK 1 to show the full process of the clean to be able to make this walk through guide for everyone else to use...
Any questions feel free to ask.
This should take a 1hr to 3hrs depending on how bad you go into switch off mode and then into your own zone.
Enjoy.
