Engine oil change MK1

Postby osta » Thu Aug 06, 2015 11:43 pm

Just a quick question to those menders who know the underside of MK1 engines better than I do. Is it the case that more old oil will drain out of the sump if the front of the car is on ramps versus being level? I realise that you'd have to be careful not to overfill when filling up before driving off the ramps.

It is better to get her level and drain.

There are a number of drains and oil-ways in the head & block that work best with the engine level. Just make sure the oil is nice and hot and it will all drain out easily.

Thanks guys. Interestingly I don't have the jacks at home to raise the car so it's level so I went to a garage today who hire out their ramps as I wanted to change the gearbox and diff oil. Knowing it's a good idea to open the filler/level plugs first I did this and oil pored out of both. So I guess the last time someone changed the oil they must have used ramps or suchlike.

Interesting chat tonight with a bloke outside the Chippy in Hindley who said he had an mx5 until last year. I mentioned that I'd had a bit of lifter noise when starting up on Saturday and hadn't heard it before. He recommended I use 0w40 fully synthetic in it to prevent it. I was surprised at this and told him I thought 10w 40 was recommended as the engine is "older". He agreed that it used to be the case but these days oil is much better/advanced and it's not really valid anymore.
I don't know what people think about this as I haven't heard of it before.

Funny really, I've had more people chat to me about this car than any other I've had!
We nattered for about 10 mins, I had to remind him his chips would be cold

Posted this here as it was about oil?

The guy was half correct but he had no clue why.

There is a design fault in the Mk1 that lets dirt get in the tappets and stop them working properly and that can cause the rattle at start up.

The proper way to fix it to to strip the tappets out, clean them and replace the tappets back in the cylinder head.

It is a long and time consuming job.

For many years Mobil 1 have sold a product, Mobil1 New Life 0W/40 that is an oil targeted at older engines say from about 1980 and it ha two specific aspects. It is very thin at low temperatures hence 0W, but not too thin at operating temperature so the 40 rating. It has a very aggressive additive package that specifically cleans the engine a bit more than most other oils that can also have a downside in that it may send too much dirt around the engine but others may disagree.

In the case of the Mk1 cars with the hydraulic tappets, the aggressive cleaning additives may well get some of the grime out of the hydraulic tappets and the very thin viscosity at startup may well help it to get the tappets working better.

It does not work in all cases and lots of Mk1 owners are more than happy with 10W/40.

Some of the cheap oils used in garges in the 1990's had poor cleaning packages that did not keep the tappets clear and many cars did not get a regular oil change.

Castrol Edge 0W/40 does not have such an aggressive cleaning package and in the case of the MK1 may not assist here.

Message received and understood Captain :-D
I suppose the general rule is "change your oil regularly" and you won't go to wrong if you stick to the tried and tested brands
Although I might try a bit of that aggressive oil you mentioned for a week or two and then go back to normal , see if that helps.
I'm not that bothered as the car had sat unused for a week, and a little blip on the throttle cleared it.
"The all do that Sir" lol
Oil remains for me a bit of a Voodoo science, I'll just stick to what the majority find best on this forum as they know more than I do, and certainly more than "some bloke" I've just met.

This place is a brilliant resource... pinged a donation over last w'end.

I am more than happy to change it twice a year, she is worth every penny, just like I do on the good old Blackbird.

Our daily drivers just get an annual change.

Quick question regarding this, trying to ascertain what oil I should be running for my 1.8 NA, it's running Mazdaspeed kit so is putting out 170BHP naturally aspirated (I believe). Previous owner had the engine overfilled for drifting.

Going by the rest of his maintenance, I'd like to be extremely safe on how I proceed, what grade of oil and what oil? (Fully Synth/Part Synth, Oil with extra cleaning agent).

I've changed to fresh oil, with some auto-box oil in it whilst we've been working on it, but need advice on what oil I will run it on.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: Been in contact with Opie Oils, been advised 5W40 Fully Synth (Bought Motul Sport), if it burns oil move to 10W50.
