Fuel light positioning

Postby Pincherrn » Wed Sep 04, 2013 9:10 am

Hi there,

I have just been having a think about my dash for the Exocet. I have been thinking about one of Hamish dash panels but not sure if it is in keeping with the rest of the car. My dash has the bank of 4 warning lights with HEAT and SEATBELTS at the bottom. I can leave the HEAT as it works as it should but as I'm using harnesses not the donor belts the SEATBELTS won't be used. Can I, providing I can find the correct legend, put the led in the space behind it and will the led provide enough light for this type of fitment or could I replace it with something else. I'm also thinking of changing the lighting to led. I plan on fitting the three light kit but haven't thought about the other 2 leds yet.
Sorry to waffle on.

As it is the LED is unlikely to provide enough light behind a filter. I have used a fairly soft-light LED in the kit so you don't get blinded at night... plus as it's a 3mm (for the sake of neatness) so light output is low. If you find a filter, it would need to be a clear one as it's a 2-colour LED...a coloured filter would definitely not work.

However, if it is a coloured filter (amber or red) then a white LED might work (but will only work with the red on/off light mode on the kit) - or if you just need a higher output amber/red LED then I probably have a 5mm one in the parts bin that would be appropriate.

When I originally designed the kit, I was tempted to offer a 'pod' to fit to the dash binnacle with holes for the LEDs and labelled up nicely but the tooling cost killed that idea for a low-volume product. I'll chat to Hamish see if he might fancy producing something...

Thanks for that. I am just worried about having small unlabelled warning lights on the dash for the IVA. I am going to investigate possibilities further. Need to pay a visit to a scrappy and have a look for possible filters. Clear would be good so I could use the amber red facility. Like the idea of a little module. Reminds me of aircaft ILS marker light unit.
Look up Bendix King KR22.

Sorry to steal the topic, just thought of replying here just in case the OP is interested.

I am at about to buy the low fuel warning light from Autolink, I got to this forum after looking for a low fuel warning light already made, I have some circuit drawings for this, but making it myself goes beyond my ability. Anyway I thought of adding this warning light as I will be replacing my gauge faces with custom made ones made by Adam of Revlimiter.net, while in the process I thought of adding this low fuel light, I am also ordering the center indicators (http://revlimiter.net/store/indicators-na.php.

I wanted to place the low fuel indicator in one of the (in my car) unused indicators and wanted to ask, should I ask for that low fuel warning to be transparent? Do you think the 3mm LED will be enough to light through there? I thought of adding an empty small bulb holder in one of those unused indicators, drilling it to stick and glue the LED in it. Do you think a 5mm would work better in this particular case. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to get blind as you say at night, but I want to make sure I notice it during sunny days which is in fact 90% of the time I use the car.

I was also wondering, will you be offering any other promo code for the fault codes reader anytime soon? And do you know if I can use the MM code living in Spain?

Thanks for the help

The LED has been chosen to give the right balance of visibility and annoying-ness when mounted prone. The LED's lens is a frosted finish and it is of a fairly low luminance. I doubt it would give sufficient brightness behind a filter - especially in sunshine.

Other LEDs are available and if you're happy to, you could find one with a higher luminance or a larger lens (say 5mm). However, the LED on the fuel light is a bi-polar bi-colour LED to allow for the yellow/red output. You would need to account for this in choosing another bulb...either by choosing a similar type, or setting the kit to a single colour mode...or rewiring with a separate ground to use a 3-pin LED. You're looking for an LED with forward voltage of around 2V and the required luminance produced at around 15mA.

If you have your heart set on changing the LED I'm happy to lend any help I can (I may even have something suitable in the parts box) - feel free to contact me by emailing... info at binarypunk dot co dot uk

I don't have any plans for further promotions in the near future, sorry. I'm not sure about Autolink's promo code...would be worth giving them a call to check, but I don't see why not.

Jon, I was wondering, what happens if I disconnect the battery in the car after setting the low fuel module warning to amber/flashing amber? Will it keep that configuration after I connect the battery of the car again, or will it go to the default amber/red configuration?

Just in case the two colour one does not give enough luminance under daylight, I am thinking of soldering an amber 5mm high luminance LED instead.

Please let me know your thoughts.

By the way, I forgot to ask, do you already have the 3 lights modules ready?

All settings are permanently saved, even if power is disconnected. The new version of the 3-light kit is in testing but I have been called away unexpectedly and am currently stuck in a godforsaken Premier Inn in Chichester, so there will be a couple of days' delay unfortunately. I also am having problems with my email here for some reason - seemingly my mailbox security is too tight!

Any replacement LED would need a forward voltage of ~1.8-2.0V and will be supplied with ~15mA - basically any 'standard' LED will be fine, but not a 'high-power' LED, which would need a separate supply and a transistor.

Do you think this would work as a replacement then?:

Finally getting round to looking at this dash again. Have decided I want a Hamish style dash but having to make one myself as it looks like Hamish is snowed under. Now trawling the internet for the right LEDs and holders for the project. I will be moving up to 5mm LEDs as I think the 3mm will look lost on the panel. Thanks for your information on the type of LED I need to look for. Do you think the brightness you say will be enough for the other warning lights or should I go brighter. Bearing in mind that the Exocet will more than likely hardly ever be out in the dark. So it is daylight brightness I'm more bothered about.

Many thanks in advance

So is the LED in the kit a standard 2 pin as you say about rewiring with a 3 pin. Sorry not near my garage at the minute.

Cheers
