Winking Popups Mod for Mk1

Come and see what our Jon is up to, with his electric gizmos that his mind and hands mould into magic little boxes of tricks, he gets bored very easily, so if you have an idea that you can throw at him, all the better for him to play with ;0)

Winking Popups Mod for Mk1

Postby binarypunk » Wed May 22, 2013 9:05 am

I have been working on a pretty cool mod for the Mk1....
Videos speak louder than words.

The kits are available now from Autolink shop HERE:

A detailed fitting guide and FAQ are available HERE

Usage:
There are different options for fitting and using the Wink Mod. All options apply to all Mk1 cars, but will work differently depending on the exact model. What you choose to do is up to you, depending how you want it to work... However, the basic principle is the same all round - the lights must be up to do a wink.

1) UK Mk1 (Green Retract Relay Under Dash):
There is an integral 3-second delay on the pop-ups for the flash-to-pass function on this model. This gives you more options with the Wink Mod.

Stalk: The best way to use the Wink Mod on these cars is to use the light stalk integration. Whether the lights are open or closed, do a 'double pull' on the stalk to do a wink (if the lights are closed, they will open first, then wink, then close). Double-pull-and-hold will keep the winking light closed until you release. The hi-beam(s) come on during the wink.

Button: If you are using a button, pop up the lights however you choose (switch on lights, or hit the dash button) then press the button to do the wink. Hold the button down to hold the wink. Press the button repeatedly to do multiple winks. When you're done, retract the lights again. It is possible to use the button during a flash-to-pass, but this requires good timing to get it right (unlike with the stalk), however...interesting results can be had by mis-timing it...including a mexican wave style wink.

2) UK Mk1 (Black retract relay under dash)

Stalk: Pop the lights up if they're not already. Do a double pull on your bright lights, wink happens. As there is no in-built delay on the flash-to-pass, it is not possible to do the 'open-wink-close' as with the green relayed cars. It is possible to swap the black to the green relay, however.

Button: Pop the lights up and push the button. This works in the same way as in 1) above.

3) Non-UK Cars

If you have done the 'flash to pass' diode mod, then the Wink Mod will work the same as in 2) above. It is not possible (or not easy) to change to the green relay, however.

If not, you can still use either stalk or button (or both). The button works the same as with all cars. However, the stalk double-pull will only work with the lights already popped.

That's so cool, makes me want to go buy a mk1 just to have it.

I have a similar mod for the mk2, a winking bonnet, you remove the secondary catch for the bonnet, do about 60mph then pop the bonnet, haven't figured a way of closing it again though, or seeing where your going after....hmm.......

That reminds me to remind everyone that they should use this mod only when it is legal to do so. Dropping one light at night on a country lane is both dangerous and naughty!!!

It won't. The popups work as normal unless you deliberately do a wink.

I must admit, the idea of winking headlamps brought back uncomfortable memories of failed relays on TR7's but the vid makes it look fun :text-goodpost:

Now, I really like this, but there is a slight flaw? I assume that this only works if the lights are already popped? In which case, most of us normally drive with them closed in the daytime which is when this is best used. I have always fancied having the lights do a 'Mexican Wave' when flashed!! Is there any chance of this being worked out by somebody?

Not exactly...it depends. If you have a UK car with the green retract relay, you can do an 'open-wink-close' in one move. Currently I'm saying this doesn't work with the UK black-relayed cars, but actually I think it will...more testing will confirm. However, non-uk cars without the flash-to-pass mod will need to open the lights first (this is fundamental to the way this wink works...like an actual wink - the eyes are open, then one of them closes).

Either way, it means opening the lights (as you presumably would do to anyway) and then pressing a button, (or doing a double pull on the stalk) to wink. No more difficult than doing an 'open and flash'.

A 'mexican wave' would only be possible by wiring into both motors, which is a bit of a pain, but I will keep it in mind.
