Halfords Engine Oil Time Again

Postby drumtochty » Thu Jul 23, 2015 4:19 pm

Until Sunday August 2nd Halfords have their usual summer offer of 4 ltrs of engine oil for £12.

The 5W/40 or 10W/40 is great for a Mk1 but the 5W maybe a bit better if your tappets are noisy at startup but either will do the job.

The 5W/30 for Ford is good for the Mk2 and the Mk3 but the Mk3 needs 4.5 litres and small bottles are about £10 each.

Therefore not a great deal for a Mk3 unless you have a fleet and can use a few pots across the fleet.

There tend to be other offers on 5 ltrs of 5W/30 from other places that would be more suitable if a Mk3 is your only car.

I wouldn't use 5W/30 in a Mk2. It's basically the same engine as Mk1. 5W/40 or 10W/40 (or 0W/40 ) are all good. 5W/30 would be too thin.

The 10W/40 is semi..

The others are fully synthetic but at these prices they are more like more semi than the semi but no where near fully synthetic

I'm one of those guys who likes to measure the difference, not saying I'm right or wrong just a different thought process.

I have examined lots of used oil analysis reports from the MX5 and can find no greater amount of wear metals in the used oil samples in the cars using a 30 grade oil compared to the UOA of those cars with the 40 grade oils.

Just my take on it.

Some Mk1's do not have a standard oil cooler and in that case a hotter engine tends to like a thicker oil, that's why I always use a 40 grade oil in then although I was told most of the cars from 1994 may have an oil cooler.

Wayne prefers a 1OW/40 in the Mk2 and to be honest if that's what is in the oil stach when I have a Mk2 on the lift, I would not go out and get some more 5W/30, I would just use the 40 grade oil.

Again not saying who is right or wrong.

Semi in the Mk 1 1.6 and 1.8, semi in the Mk 2 1.6 and 1.8 , semi in the Mk 2.5 1.6 fully in the Mk 2.5 1.8.
That is correct, regardless of intetweb.
