Rear sill repair costs?

This is the section to see what is hidding behind those panels, and how to get rid of the tin worm, cutting out and welding in fresh metal, protection and paint.

Rear sill repair costs?

Postby jools182 » Tue Oct 25, 2016 12:27 pm

The mk2 has an advisory on the last MOT of corrosion on the rear sills

I have had a look and the drivers side has bubbles underneath, the passenger side has some smaller bubbling

Question is how much is this going to cost me to get repaired?

I'm working out whether it is actually going to be worth it as Mk2's are going for around £800 - £1200

thanks

Difficult one as you need to look at those Mk2 cars and if they need the same amount of work or the front chassis rails are away not any better a deal.

OTOH if you get a clean car for £1,200 happy days!

Now with regards to repairs on your car, someone will probably do a repair for £100 a side, now that may well look OK but what you may find is that once they remove the outer sill they weld the new outer sill onto rusty inner sills.

No real way of knowing until the outer sill comes off and the extent of rust is found. It may well be say £300 a side to fix it properly.

Then you need to look at both rear wheel arches and also the front chassis rails, the front wheel arches and the area where the front wings interface with the front bulkhead which can get impacted with crud and rust away unseen.

Lets hope it is simple outer sill repair.

£800-£1200, 80% will need the front rails and sills doing or they have been bodged for those prices.

I have never understood the doom and gloom with the front rail repair as it is far cheaper to do than the rears that is seen as more important because it is seen...
Front rail sections can be bought for £35 each and you will be looking at around £150 a side to fit and undersealed including inside the box section, job done...

The rear sill section,,,if you can see it then the inner sill will need repairing also as they blow from the inside out, as to is the rear arches, repair sections are around £80'ish a side, fitting, painting and sealing will be around the £1,300 mark but that would be worst case.
Personally i would not be put off from a good low mileage roadster that needs all doing at the correct price to make a good solid car to enjoy for a very long time.

Yes you have to accept that a car costs money to run. A Mk4 is say £3,500 a year in deprectiation.

A ten or twenty year old one on the other hand has a higher maintenace cost but as Wayne say once you have get that rust sorted and say the car lasts for 5 years the cost per year is say £400 a year or less in bodyshop cost.

As in all car buying and maintenac decisions look at the cost of fixing yours and also the state of what is available for £1,200 or so.
