Why?

Whenever I have any old car, I tend to collect A LOT of bits, just in case. That's why I end up with a garage full of "come in handy" bits.

Also in Wiltshire and Somerset, (which I know well), there are still a load of old traditional breakers yards, and there seem to lots of 1.6's but few (if any) 1.8's.

One of them said " 1.8 gearboxes are like rocking horse S***, not like 1.6's.

So i thought I'd get a GB and diff, it also helps wjen you need to take the one in the car apart.

Thanks for info.

Terry

P.S. Don't take this as offensive auto owners, but what is the point of an auto gearbox in an MX5 or any sportscar???????

I wouldn't waste money on a spare gearbox "just in case you need one". They are very strong and are a rare failure point. You can add a turbo boosting the power up to 300bhp and the gearboxes tend to be ok.

:hand:
OH god someone had to.........
How dare you sir, i have two Autos and would not change them now, try one first before you knock them ,but try a good un like my1.8's ,Chris ,Chris where are you, you have drove mine a few times your view please ,would you own one that is well serviced, correct and set up right?
Terry buddy
Long story how i ended up with two autos, everything that i never wanted but would not swap them now for anything, don't get me wrong a love a good manual when they are set up right and i have had loads over the years, i have a Mk 2, 6 speed here now that is being fettled for my use for shows only.
But it is a big can of worms to open Terry, and the way i look at it is..... there is a version and Mk for everyone to be a Mx/roadster owner, so that works for me 100%
Plus it is also down to what and how she is being used, mine are motorway mx/roadsters so no need to be changing gears anyway, plus i collect spares parts to fix these babies(gearboxes if needed, engines, wheels and so on) ,go out on SOS's so a small trailer gets put on the back with tools and what not's in, i bring spares to the rallies in a autojumble style, so she is a shiney work horse, and does her job very well, if you are Blyton, she my be coming with the box on the back if we cannot get it all in Chris's car?

Never fear m-m jnr is here! ;)

Wouldn't touch a 1.6 auto but I'd take a well set up 1.8 mk1 or mk2 (either of yours m-m are welcome to come and live on my driveway though I'd rather have the six-speed box for my project car...)

It's an honest question Terry, I didn't see the point either but as autos go they are damned good - turns the roadster into a neat little tourer, kicks down really well and I'd still take on anything in one that's set up right that I would in my manual. They can be a pleasure to drive.

I'll wont ever say a bad word about them now but I would always rather a manual when it comes to the twisty stuff - the auto's no problem in dealing with the twisty bits I'm just a bit old fashioned in using gears to slow for bends rather than brakes
Former owne of Eunos Roadster VR-Ltd comb B - lots of mods

Then get one,and lets mat it up i have manual boxes sat here ready for when the Auto boxes give up,to change them to manuals, but the boxes are rock hard ,Autos and manuals, and as Lazza as said don't give up that often, so they can sit there for me, for when ever?
I personaly like the 5 speed box, but maybe that is down to not being use to the 6 speed box in mine yet?

I prefer the feel of the 5 speed (as long as it's got a good 2nd-1st change) but the ratios on the 6 speed are better spaced, especially for an NA car. IMO.
