Pete's taken his MK2.5 out today and seems to have a much noisier than usual . The noise is coming from the gearbox or drive train.
His MK2.5 is a 6 speed with a Limited Slip Diff - he's owned it since new - 2002....
He's going to put it on a ramp later in the week and he'll change the gearbox and diff oil. THen he'll try to see whether he can hear exactly where the noise is coming from.
Any ideas?
What you put in, you'll get back ten fold

Re: Pete's Noisey Gearbox/Drive Train - MK2.5
Just checked in with Pete on this one.
What he forgot to mention was that the diff oil came out and it was cloudy.... and there were little bits on the drain plug.

Re: Pete's Noisey Gearbox/Drive Train - MK2.5
And were the bits on the magnet sort of rectangular and about 25mm x 10mmmm with ridges on one side?
If so, it sounds like it could be the well documented Fuji diff problem where the LSD tabs break off -rumoured to be possibly caused by the use of a rolling road brake tester, instead of a Tapley.
One of the tabs may have gone into the gears and the resultant damage is the cause of the whine.
Replacement diff or keep changing the oil to get all the bits out and live with an open (noisy) diff.......
