Compare Suzuki to Recent Mazda Factory Rust Protection

Postby drumtochty » Wed Feb 08, 2017 4:59 pm

The good lady got her third Suzuki Jimny in November and we bought a new one as we keep them around 8 to 10 years.

Readers will have seen the pictures of the Mk4 underside in late 2015 and they are here.

http://mx5scotland.co.uk/board2/viewtop ... &hilit=mk4

Lets have a look at a new 2016 Suzuki Jinmy and in my opinion different versions of not very good.

I will be very busy next week.

Image

The area underneath the handbrake, no underseal there.

Image

The chassis rail where the front of the rear suspension connects plenty stonechip in certain areas and then missing for no apparent reason.

Image

Pickup point for the Transfer Box note the chassis rail is stonechipped but the bracket that holds the aluminium bracket is only painted.

Image

Front right hand side not much stonechip in this area.

Image

Front suspension pickup point note lack of stonechip.

Image

Plenty to stonechip here.

Image

Only painted areas around the front of the car.

Image

At the back of the car only the sides of the chasis rails are stonechipped the other areas are only painted.

Image

The front of the rear wheel arch is not stonechipped.

Image

The back of the rear wheel arch is say 70% done as the dirty bit is stonechiped but the cleanish bit is just painted.

Seems to be the story no matter what you buy these days, manufacturers don't expect us to now want to keep any car more than a few years before we hand them back and keep paying the monthly fee and drive away in another new one.

Personally I am with you, I keep my cars a while (last VW 12 years - current MX5 6 years - wife's fiesta 9 years) so under sealing is a must for me.

Yeah it is the norm now on these cars.....dare i say it.... they don't build them like they use to ....including the gauge of metal.

I have owned my Jimny for about 8 months and for a 14 year old car it was virtually rust free at 34,000 miles, it has now been 80% hammerited, i just need to finish off before the Winter hits, do the kingpin bearings and it should fly through the MOT next Spring.

An MX5 and a Jimny....what more could you want.
Marble White NC1 Icon.
Vented bonnet.
Quad tipped exhaust.
Stebel horn.
More cosmetic bits than you can shake a stick at.
Switchbacks fitted.
And yes it is a Sunday car.

We have a Honda CRV which is the good ladies that we got this year for her which is in very good nick underneath, we have had them before so thats why we went back to one, i just use the roadsters as dailies , as thats what they were designed for, and to be honest i'm not a lover of driving anything else.

Carrying on with the Suzuki topic, i've had a busy but productive day, when i bought the Jimny i soon became aware that the nearside kingpin bearings needed sorting and as i don't do many miles in this car i've put it off for the last 10 months, but now the MOT is looming and winter is just around the corner, i set about changing the bearings.

A good three hours later, nearside bearings and drive shaft seal replaced, test driven and all's well.

As it is the Eleventh hour of the Eleventh day of the Eleventh month tomorrow, myself and one of my Sons (possibly both Sons) will be going to the Southport Cenotaph to pay our respects to the fallen!
