Roller Tool Cabinents

Postby drumtochty » Thu Aug 25, 2016 10:33 pm

I have been against using those tall drawer tool cabinets as I have a garage that is not open to the public therefore no need to secure my tools if the outside garage door is locked.

I tend to have my tools on peg boards to easily access them.

The problem is you run out of handy wall space and lots of tools do not lend themselves to sitting on a peg board.

Halford have inexpensive sets, their proffesional sets with ballbearing runners, that do not look that strong to me and their industrial sets which to be honest did not feel that much heavier on inspection. I did get a Halfords tradecard off then that lowers prices on these items.

MachineMart have their Clarke Mechanic set which is their entry level and their HD set which from a WEB inspection appear to be a bit heavier but as yet I have not seen them in the flesh.

At the local garage today, the mechanics all have large SNAPON cabinets at around £2,500.

I have loads of tools and would consider myself a heavy private user, not a proffessional user but having a two post lift as you can guess there are a lot of guest cars turning up and using the tools.

I want something that will last say 15 years and by that time I will let the motor trade take over the car maintenace.

Has anyone purchased this type of kit in the past few years and I'm probably looking at a middle of the road solution in that I will not have stuck drawers in three years time but not spending say £1,000 to £1,500 for a base unit and an above the base unit set.

I have snapon tool chests/draws and a geodore mobile work station with a cupboard, shelfs and draws and like you am a heavy user and they do me fine...i have no tools on the walls any more.
I don't see the point of buying this stuff brand new anymore but search the online sites for someone getting rid of a good un at a 1/4 of the price from new that as not had much wear and tear, and they are all over the bay off e, from chesp nasty to super dear units.

Roller Tool Cabinents

If you are not married to the whole snapon trolley, An option I am exploring is the Adam Savage method (he of myth busters fame). Check out YouTube/Google for "Adam savage first order retrieval" it is basically a self built trolley (no drawers as crap gets lost/caught on them) that you adapt to your own most used tools, may not suit for you but is a very interesting option I am going to try.

I'll try and find a link tomorrow and post here.

My tool storage has changed over the years from cantilever tool boxes to my first Snapon tool box. It cost quite a bit and a good few years back but its still as good as the day it was bought although it looks a bit battered in places.

The roller draws on which the Snapon now sits are Halfords, I did get the professional set but to be honest, not worth the cash. Not much better than their cheaper versions. I would have bought Snapon again but the prices are just way too high for a home mechanic, that's why I bought the Halfords.

My sockets sets are stored in a Hardcastle roller draw, with a work bench top, half the price of Halfords but of the same standard.

I have been looking at the Sealey options and they do generally look better and stronger that both the Halfords and Hardcastle.

If I had the money to spare and could justify it, I would have bought a Snapon roller cabinet.

Like Mm says, no tools on the walls anymore, I drag the chests around the garage to where I need them.
