Best way to clean throttle body

Postby Pincherrn » Tue Sep 24, 2013 12:13 pm

Hi guys,

As above really. My throttle body is very dirty and is spoiling the look of the engine bay.
The casting itself is rough and ingrained, the spring is filthy, the black plastics and electrical connectors could be better. I know the butterfly and bore have some kind of coating and I don't want to damage this or the electrics.

Any help appreciated.

That all depends how OCD you want to go....

A dose of Autosol and some elbow grease will clean it up ok.

Any further, you will want to remove it from the car, remove the TPS (you will need a multimeter and feeler gauges to refit) and stuff up the holes before moving on. Then you will need to polish up the casing starting with a wire brush, moving on to wet and dry (starting fine and ending up ultra-fine) then move on to grinding and polishing pastes if you want a mirror finish. A dremel is a helpful tool with all of this.

Try brake cleaner with a straw nozzel and a tooth brush for detail. i use peek and works well on everything, just remember that once cleaned up spray it with some silicon lube spray to protect it and stay clean and keep it lubed up, you do not want it sticking :handgestures-thumbup:
