As MM says, thats not a bad failure list :handgestures-thumbup:

the welding will cost the most, you can cut a little time / cost by stripping out carpet & trim in the area as this will save the weldist clearing a fire-free zone so slightly cheaper... whats the rot like (photo's?)

balljoint is probably the gaiter but a replacement joint is ~£15 so not breaking the bank...

springs, as MM said are best replaced as pairs but these can eat hours if lower mount-bolt isn't playing ball... (used dampers & springs are readily available (as the Scene-monkies need chineese coilovers for lows  ) and usually free to clear space...)

headlamp alignment is something testers can reset during test (prs fail / retest) so not an issue...

wipers & bulbs are something you could have checked & rectified before presenting the car to test :-|

I understand budget issues but is the 5 your only transport or a fun car? if a weekend toy then does it need an immediate mot? whats the cars condition & value mot'd compared as for spares/repair? also, is it anything rare or special as opposed to just an mx5? (can seriously affect values)

As the chaps say, that is not a bad failure list and some items could have been rectified before the mot but I suppose if the budget is tight then test it first to see what it needs makes sense.

Springs, well for me like shockers, I always fit them in pairs as if one has gone the other might not be far behind.

Welding wise, as the man says strip it back your self to see how bad it is, pop some photos up for the more experienced eyes to gaze at before getting any quotes or recommendadtions.

Had a yound lad scrap an 04 Fiesta 1.4tdci all because it needed two new front coil springs for the MOT and a couple of bulbs.

Often the fail sheet makes it look worse than the problems are really.

Sounds a bit expesnive to me, but at least its getting done.

I personally would do all the mechanical stuff myself and leave the welding to someone who I trust and knows what they are doing.
