Made aware of this thread so forgive me for jumping in.

BP7P is a manual ecu only, BP6P is auto ecu only.
The BP7P will run the auto engine but revs unstable in use so effectively undriveable. I know this because I supplied a BP7P set to a garage for an auto some years ago and also other peoples experience when trying the same thing. In a previous thread https://www.mazdamenders.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=7548&p=61359&hilit=bp6p#p61359 by ChrisA25, another guy I spent a lot of time talking to, the BP7P was tried too with the same issue.

The immobiliser emulator for the MK2.5 is exactly that, and replaces a faulty immobiliser. I understand exactly what it does and am confident that it is a good solution to an increasingly common issue. The service I offer includes testing the problematic immobiliser to prove the need for an emulator, not that proof is really required because symptoms are usually very clear. So far in a short history of supply 10 have been provided and there have been 10 satisfied customers. MK2.5 immobiliser failure is becoming very common and is reasonably easy to diagnose. I will do a write up of the problem and my solution soon.

I understand from todays text Kenny that you are scrapping the car which is a shame. Please keep the ecu and immobiliser for me.

Thanks Rob

Hello Rob, If the car is going to be broken for parts, then you can have whatever you want! We have someone interested in the car as a whole but since explaining the probable cause of the car not running we have not heard anything, keep you informed.

Hi Kenny

I was going to private message you but perhaps number of posts precludes that?
Did you scrap the MK2.5 auto?

LOL! And I am "not happy" with the immobiliser being referred to as a "crap" Lucas part... :teasing-neener:
I used to work for Lucas and spent many happy hours doing validation testing on the various immobiliser products.
I don't recall any particular weaknesses, but accelerated life testing is designed to simulate 10 years of operation, and many of these parts are now 20 years+ old.
I do still have a bunch of documentation on the product (circuit diagrams, comms protocols etc.) but no test boxes or transponder programming tools any more.
Would be interested to know what actually goes wrong with the immobiliser ECUs to warrant this dubious reputation.
Unfortunately everybody blames the immobiliser for "no start" first, and then discovers failed fuel pump, blown fuse, faulty coil pack, etc.
Ho hum...

It is a well known common issue..it's not a made up problem...it is not if ,but when on the UK spec mx5's with the system fitted ..just search it in google..i have had to repair a very good number over the years for owners...

Another point in my defence is that half of them were made by Mitsubishi (and half by Lucas), so I'm only 50% to blame...
But what actually goes wrong? When you say "repaired", do you mean "replaced", or have you had the lid off and fixed a fault with the electronics?

Considering the immobiliser contains the code word necessary to enable the Engine Management System, plus the transponder codes for all the keys, chucking it away is by far the most luddite solution.
If it's a 2p component that fails due to overstress, vibration, old age, etc. then 5 mins with a soldering iron & a big magnifying glass would seem be a much more efficient fix!
The thing we couldn't support was the microcontroller. It was an industry standard Motorola part when we spec'd it, but within a few years they obsoleted it and we couldn't get stock for service parts.

An easy search will bring up this issue that as been with us for a long time ...mazda wanted £2,500 to fix a mx ...getting the full system from a running junker was a couple of hundred pounds and a quick fix can take 20 minutes and off you go...getting keys merged a bit longer and changing all the lock set also ...half a day...
The balls in your court....can you trick one up to make it de-immoblizesd so an aftermarket immobiliser can be fitted?
But saying that it is not always the box that fails...water to the ECU also plays a part with failure's ,but it as mainly been the box...another route is to change the ECU to an aftermarket unit which does away with the system..but that is an expensive route..
So blow the dust off your solder iron and help the community of owners...they will sell, but many have tried.

My point is that you don't want to "get rid" of the standard immobiliser. Fix it and you keep your standard key codes, insurance valid etc.
The immobiliser is mounted above your knees, so shouldn't be subject to water ingress. If I had to guess I'd say the electrolytic cap on the 5V regulator would fail due to being constantly powered for 20 years.
If you can gather together some parts that have definitely failed (although if you replace the engine management ECU as well I guess you can't be sure of the culprit) then I'd be interested to have a look.
A bit of simple probing with a meter should confirm if the power rails are up, but unfortunately I don't have the vintage laptop with the comms software on it any more.

As a follow up to a reply some time ago about the non start issues, that is now resolved, However for the avoidance of doubt, the Mazda MX5 1.8 Auto, Like all auto boxes starts and runs in the neutral position !
