Mk3.5 not starting after battery change

Postby FrankMazda » Sat Dec 29, 2018 12:02 pm

Hi there,

This is my first attempt at self-maintaining the car and I feel now that this was perhaps misguided :-( I can't now get my car to start.

Long story short - I needed a new battery so I popped to EuroCar parts - first one the terminals were too small, second too angled so I've ended up with a battery from Mazda which thankfully fits. In between trips, I kept refitting the old battery which was fine so I'm pretty sure I've got the fitting process right. I'd had a read through the forum here and knew to reset the DSC with the full opposite locks etc. However, after this final change, I can't seem to start the car. I get all the dash lighting up with the ignition, the immobiliser light goes off fine, but the starter motor is just whining.

I'm now stuck in Manchester with a car that doesn't start and regretting starting tinkering at all! Really hoping there's a quick fix and one of you lovely people can help me out.

Cheers.

I know this may sound a bit of a "IT" moment but try disconnecting the battery and re connecting it again..

Just gave that a go and no joy :-/ Would it be useful to share a video of the dash and assorted noises when I try to start up?

Maybe a daft question but was the car starting ok prior to fitting the new battery (I know you said the battery wanted changing but assume after a charge the car started fine)

Yes - it was working "ok", but the satnav GPS had gone awry and I was feeling a bit short on power when pulling away.

Your battery is flat....charge it up.

Even if it is a new battery there is no saying how long it has been sat on a shelf somewhere.

Thank you - there is an indicator on the top of the new battery which is green, so I suspect it isn't flat. Is there a way of resetting the immobiliser, just to be sure it isn't that? Is there a fuse for the fuel pump to check or any other steps I could take to avoid having to call out a breakdown service?

A green indicator does not always mean a 'fully' charged battery.
A fully charged battery will put all your dash lights on and throw the starter motor and engine over.
A partially charged battery will put your dash lights on and energise the solenoid which would then either 'chatter' or just engage the ring gear with not enough power to turn the engine over.
A very discharged battery will again put the dash lights on and energise the solenoid but will not have enough power to engage the ring gear, but it can have enough power to spin the starter motor, which would give you the whining noise you described in your very 1st post.
Please charge your battery 'fully' and report back....ignore the green indicator!

I am not trying to be bolshie, i come across this on a daily basis in my job.

Hi there - I borrowed a battery charger and charged up overnight - just tried fitting again and nothing doing. Still just turning over on what I think is the starter motor.

You really need to find someone with a half decent code reader first of all.

You said that the sat nav was playing up prior to the battery change and a loss of power, could be connected but somehow don't see where.

You can buy various code readers from stand alone hand held devices to bluetooth versions that connect to your lap top.

Worth buying one (don't have to spend a lot, mine cost under £50.00 and has earned its keep on a number of cars) as it's easy to use and helps to identify problems.
