Drivers side indicators not working

Postby Larz2000 » Thu Jan 25, 2018 4:04 pm

Hi again. I've an intermittent problem with my indicators on the driver's side of the car. I think I first noticed an issue when I locked and unlocked the car with the fob. Sometimes only the one indicator (that I could view at any one time, eg front) would light up upon locking and unlocking. I never thought much about it as the car locked.
I've recently noticed that when signalling to turn right, the dash 'green arrow' for right indicator flashes once then stops altogether. Indicating left is fine. Hazards only flash on left side.
As the problem of indicating is intermittent, and there is no double speed flashing of the indicators, I'll assume (for now) that all bulbs are fine.

I searched the internet and found a thread on another site with the same problem.
https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=74664
Although it's not clear from that post that the relay is the problem.
Any ideas folks?

Now it could be a number of things but my attack list would be earth? stalk? relay?

I wish I knew how to work with a multimeter properly/what I was actually doing with car electrics.
Here goes:
1: bulbs are all fine on driver's side indicators.
2: front and side bulb holders read 4.0 ohms with multimeter set to 200. The rear one eventually settled a 9.0
3: the indicator stalk 'looks' fine although I don't really know how it all works as the gubbings appear to be hidden where I just couldn't see - even with the cowling off.
4: the relay clicks and repeats clicking when indicator stalk switched to left turn. The relay clicks once only when the indicator stalk selects right turn.

I removed the relay and checked the PCB as I read a thread about dry solder joints. I've went over as many of the solder joints as I felt safe to do and made the solder wet and added a little more new solder. That has made no difference.

As I see it, the relay, although making an initial click when switching stalk to right turn, is not repeating when receiving the electrical signal from the indicator stalk.

Any more ideas folks, or, have I given enough info to make a diagnosis?

No auto electrician, but I always start by checking as many earthing points as I can find, check the simple easiest points first, then escalate the search if needs be.

Don't assume that because an earth point looks good and clean its OK, the wire itself could have broken down.

The relay sounds fine, it could be a stalk fault but to me it all points to an earth fault.

Try to follow the wiring loom back from the light clusters, at some point it will be earthed to the body.

If your brave enough, you could try to earth the indicators out with a piece of suitable wire or a power probe if you can get uour hands on one. We use one to diagnose minor electrical faults.

Sure one of the senior menders will be along shortly with a more definitive answer.

2003 1.8 SV-T ! Still miss mine and wish I had never sold it but you live and learn. The worst part is I still see my old girl every time I pop into town.

Got back to this problem after the indicators working fine while going to work and back. They're off again though. So far, the only issue I've found is corrosion in one of the smaller white connectors that connects the rear off-side lamp cluster to the loom. I cleaned it up as best I could, but no joy.
Thanks for the wiring diagrams as thy indicate where the ground/earth points are.
To follow the loom from back to front, it looks like I need to take my hard-top off, get the soft top up, remove the carpets and remove what looks like an aluminium panel from the 'parcel shelf'.
This will allow me access to a large white connector block where I believe there is an earth point. Can anyone confirm this?

No. They don't all work with hazard. As said in original post hazards only work left/near side. I can't find any fault in wiring in engine bay or from rear lamps to near seatbelt mounts.
I've called in an auto electrician. He'll be visiting on Monday. Essentially, I'm throwing in the towel on this one hoping a tech can get quickly to the fault. At least the car is sufficiently dismantled to aid his diagnosis.
