mx-5 mk2 (2001) Faulty Immobiliser

Postby Alex » Thu Jan 25, 2018 12:01 pm

Hi there,

I've been reading through some of these forums and looks like some really great stuff from Mazda Menders and other users - so hoping somebody can help me out.

An issue with a 2001 mx-5 mk2 began last week when tried to start the vehicle. Seemed to be turning over just fine but no ignition - which lead me to believe either a problem with fuel or electrical. Tried next day and again, turned over but no ignition. Prepared to tow car to garage on following day but car seemed to miraculously start. Took to garage anyway, turned off and successfully started again at garage on first attempt before handing over keys for them to took a look.

Given the following diagnosis from auto-garage:

Investigate non-start
Battery flat, attempted jump start
Vehicle cranks over but will not fire
Check for fuel at rail, fuel present but no pressure
Supplied separate fuel supply, still will not fire
Checked for spark at plugs, no spark present
Possible immobiliser fault.
Put battery on charge
Tested battery, battery faulty
Fitted battery from stock, still non-start
Removed immobiliser control unit, inspected and refitted.
Vehicle started ok and now shows the immobiliser light when vehicle starts
Suspect immobiliser fault
Remove test battery and refit original, non start

Upon collection of the car I was told it would not start, but after 5 or so attempts, it did come to life and i managed to drive home. I am slightly sceptical about being told my battery is faulty because no issues before hand and had enough juice to start after 5 failed attempts.

I am obviously more concerned about the intermittent immobiliser fault and would welcome any help and advice on the matter.

It may be worth noting that the car was left standing the week previous, but then running with no issues for a couple of days before this problem. Also, the weather has been terrible for the last couple of weeks so i would not rule out some sort of water ingress - but this was not mentioned by the garage technician.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Has anyone checked the passenger side foot well under the carpet for water or damp yet?.

Thanks for the post, apologies on late reply.

I don't think this was checked at the garage but i've just peeled the carpet back myself and stuck my hand in there. Seems bone dry. Im not sure if it has dried out since the issue started but it rained last night so if there was a leak i'd expect it to be wet now.

Nope, I don't think they ran any kind of fault diagnostics. They suggested i take the car to another garage, presumably where they have the equipment to do this kind of test. I rang the place and without even knowing what is wrong with it they were quoting me around £600.

You can buy a decent hand held scanner for less than £100.00.

Mine cost around £80.00 and does all I need it to on obii 2s
1993 1.6 Eunos Roadster (gone)
1998 UK Mk 2 1.6 (gone)
2003 1.8 SVT Sport (shouldnt have sold it)

Ok i've hit a bit of a problem. Bought the OBD2 connector, cant find where to plug it in. There is definitely no port by the fuse box under steering wheel. There is however, a grey box with diagnosis on the top located under the bonnet, above the passenger wheel arch - But this does not fit the 16 pin OBDII socket. Do i need to get a different connector?

Almost sure the OBDII port was located to the lower right of the steering wheel under a pull of panel on my departed mk2 and 2.5

From memories of my now departed mk2 and 2.5, the OBDIi port was under a pop off cover to the bottom right of the steering wheel

She could be, but it should certainly have a OBDII port hidden away somewhere.

And yes yet another double post by yours truly :bow-yellow:

1998 UK Mk 2 1.6 (gone)
2003 1.8 SVT Sport (shouldnt have sold it)
