De-powered power steering rack

Postby Mxmurray » Thu Nov 02, 2017 11:37 am

Morning all
I have been using my mk3 mx5 for some Autosolo's recently and my intention is to get my mk1 out next season.
My issue is the mk3 steering doesn't seem to be able to keep up with the steering inputs and I can easily find the steering almost locking up say when driving through a slalom.
Now I fitted a power steering rack to my mk1 not long after I bought it and I'm thinking I may suffer the same issue with the mk1 power steering rack.
So I have looked into the possibility of de-powering the steering rack (the powered rack is a quicker than the normal unpowered rack hence the need to use the powered rack).
Has anyone any comments on this modification?
The heavy steering I can live with I'm really after the directness of the non powered rack if that makes sense.

I don't have my old manual rack any more.
I have managed to find a very cheap power steering rack so I will buy that and have a play about and keep you updated.
Cheers.

Is it the whole package you have bought or just the rack.

It's just the rack I have bought mate.
I will have a complete power steering set up to sell once I have the other rack ready to be fitted.

The plan is to split the rack down to expose the seal on the actual rack and remove it.
I then intend to tig weld the pinion to take the slack out of it that is there to take up the play of the fluid.
I will then seal the holes for the pipework either using the pipe fittings or maybe epoxy to keep the dirt out.
I will hopefully then have a faster rack that won't overpower the pump when being used in anger whilst competing in autosolo.

I will indeed attempt to do a video or walk through if only for people to see if I have done anything wrong.

Was supposed to be going picking the rack up today, attempted to contact the seller last night, no reply, more messages to his this morning still no reply.
I wanted the extra rack so I could keep my mk1 mobile whilst I did the job on the rack.
Looks like I will have to strip my own rack down now.
So I will do a full write up on removing the rack, de powering it and refitting it.
