1.6 brake upgrade

Would 15 inch be big enough?

14" and 15 " will be fine, the only 14" rims i personally hit problems with was the very early Spoke wire rims which were made for the 1.6 in mind so are a very tight fit for the 1.8, but with a bit of a fettle with the positions of the wheel/tyre wieghts you can just get away with them to fit.

My 14" Wats fit over the 1.8 brakes just fine! Worthwhile upgrade.

To be honest the 1.6 set up is just as good as the 1.8 set up, it is just down to how they are being looked after and pads that are being used. the Large so called sports brakes are a waste of time , and forget it as a Up grade, if it was worth doing ,i personally would of done it many many years ago.

Been keeping an eye on this one as now we have sold our Sport with the "BIG BRAKES" we are going to be running our 1991 1.6 in all but standard trim.

On my to do list is the brakes so before I go and buy a replacement set or upgrade to 1.8 brakes, I will read on and make an informed decision based upon peoples experience and views.

That said the little brakes on the Eunos seem just fine under reasonable driving conditions.

Wayne I will have to do pads and discs at some stage so I figured I would "upgrade" while I was at it. Are you saying it's not really worth it? What about braided hoses? Just thinking about getting it all done and hoping they last another 22years... Lol.

If you want to upgrade , then go for it, all i am saying is if i was running a 1.6 again as a daily i can think of better things to put my money into before i would upgrade the braking system that is more than up to the job, thats all, it is not a problem upgrading , as i do it for a lot of owners, i am just being honest.

I'm purely doing my car on a budget the eventual goal is for it to be a track day car so I'm just upgrading the parts as they need replacing. my brakes are shot so anything I do to them is going to make a noticeable difference. Plus it has worked out to be an extra £90 to upgrade to the 1.8 brakes with grooved discs and braided brake lines than it would have been to just swap out the standard discs and pads. Hopefully the gains will out way the cost.

If the 1.6 brakes you have on now are fudged then it is a no brainer as you would be replacing them any way, tip.... get a big blob of blue tack to help with changing brake pipes and you must invest in one of these....

We have a how to on doing brakes, so a tin of copper slip will be needed and red rubber grease so they all work at there best and last if you need advice , just ask.

I would agree with Wayne that as a daily drive the 1.6 brakes are fine.
It's only when you take to the track for some action that the 1.8 brakes will out perform the 1.6 It's not just the actual stopping power but the ability of the bigger brakes to dissipate the heat of fifteen or twenty minutes thrashing without boiling the fluid or cooking the brake pads. Even then you will need some uprated brake pads to cope with the heat.

So unless you are pushing pushing pushing on track then there aren't any huge gains. In my humble opinion anyway

At the risk of getting off topic and just out of curiosity what would you spend your money on Wayne?

Water pump change ,cam belt change ,full service, seals and boots, good tyres ,a full alignment service brakes, fit good pads and disks, Roof if needed, suspension if needed , a spare key if needed and enjoy her.

He he I can tick some of those off, suspension and bushes swapped, alignment done, timing belt done just before I got it, second service with me due soon, pads part of the planned brake change, hood still ok for now... Still enjoying it big time....

I learnt this lesson the hard way then had a pricy job getting a new one as it's chipped :( I'm hoping to do a big weekend when I do the breaks and get the suspension track rod ends and ball joints all done ready for the alignment. I have a set of 14" alloys waiting to go matt black and the new hangers are being sand blasted so that I can paint them. Just waiting for the money for the pads and discs atm.

Take plenty of pics once you get started!! Thankfully mine came with two keys neither of which are chipped!!!

Timpsons for a key are the cheapest I have found as they just put the original chip number on the new key chip.
