1999 MK 2 Immobilised

Postby gaz » Tue Oct 29, 2013 9:26 pm

Hello everyone…
I have a big problem & I am hoping someone can give me some help please 

I lost my only key for my MX5 the other day. I have had only one key in the 13 years I have owned it. I know I should have got a second but never got round to it….
Anyway I called a mobile auto locksmith [http://www.mbclocksmiths.com/] who said for £130 he would make me a key where my car was for £130
He fiddles with my locks & cut a key then said he had to take my immobiliser box home overnight to program the new key to it.
Excellent I thought…. Next day he returned & fired up my car. It started for a few secs then cut out and hasn’t started since. He tried re coding the key 3 times & even asked a friend to send him another one. None of which worked. I must point out that in 13 years my MX5 has never mechanically failed or failed to start.
So reluctantly I asked my local garage to tow it in & plug it into the diagnostics.
My garage told me:

“P1624 'Anti-theft system' is present. Our key specialist has reported that it is likely to be resulting from a fault with the ECU or a coding issue, and requires further investigation. Our recommendation would be to take to a Mazda dealership.”

So my question is do I have to go to the dealer or is there a cheaper option in getting this repaired?
Also I believe the auto locksmith may have damaged my car would this be possible to prove & should I be seeking some of the costs from him?
Thanks in advance

First off greetings and welcome.
2 nd, when we get you sorted...GET ANOTHER KEY CUT STAIGHT AWAY :naughty:
You DO NOT need to go anywhere near a dealership with this and you can do this very easy on your own with the correct parts, there is a how to just about to go live to follow from a follow owner Barry ( :handgestures-thumbup: :bow-yellow: ) that hit a simliar problem and was spot on with putting something together after talking him through it.
Give me a shout and i'll pass on some details on where to get your bits from to solve this.

Hi... Thanks so much for this... I have a quick question though.

In this how-to we are taping the new key to the immobiliser.
So correct me if i'm wrong here but the immobiliser will never work then & this is just to get round the problem?
If I were to source & install a new barrel at the same time then the immob would be working as usual.
Is my understanding correct?

Also If I were feeling brave and wanted to attempt this where are the best places to buy used parts?
I'll be honest I have always taken my car to the garage so I'm a total newb at this but I'm a fast learner :-)

Cheers

It does state in the how to of Barry's that this is one of the options, you can fit a full lock set or just the ignition barrel or tape the key to the coil, these are the 3 options, the 4th being taking her to a dealership and being charged £2,500 by them, you have 3 choices, the key in the coil is the easiest route, but we can talk you through them all, as the coil one is a quick fix until can find time to change the full lock set.

Just a back-covering word of warning if you go down the temporary fix route... You would either need to inform your insurer that you no longer have an immobiliser, or take the risk that if it gets nicked and they find out that the anti-theft has been bypassed, they won't pay out.

Jon you are the Saz/AT of mazdamenders, :teasing-neener: you are our safety sam buddy, but he is correct, taping the key to the just the coil is at your own personal choice and risk.

Thanks for the info chaps.... Think I'm going to sell it to be honest - will be a sad sad day but since my divorce I have had to have 2 cars anyway.
But the chap lined up to buy it will certainly be using this guide.

I'm not sure if its against policy here to talk about selling so I wont enter any details.

I will mis my St. VOG - yes sad i know but she has had a pet name for 13 years lol

Loving the trailer idea :-)

Well looks like both of my potential buyers were tyre kickers anyway so I will have to find a plan B....

I'm curious as to how having a key cut can render my car this way. Perhaps I should be pushing the guy who cut the key for a solution as my car wasn't immobilised before he "attempted" to code my key.
Surely he should carry most or all of the blame for this & he should be insured?

I'm guessing the immob unit & ECU come as a package & short of going to a Mazda dealer I will need to replace both :-(

Going to look for some prices now....

BTW I already have 6 Thai brides & a russion mistress
