How to remove the indicator stalk switch mechanism?

Postby dogrosie » Sun Jun 23, 2013 9:29 am

Hey all.
My indicator stalk is worn and is very annoying as when in the neutral position the flash-to-pass often comes on, resulting in a dead battery. It has happened a few times and is very annoying!
A nutzer kindly sold me a new entire switch mechanism.
I have removed the steering wheel, removed the boss and removed the spring. I have also unplugged all three wiring connectors from the switch.

How do I get it off? I could just yank it but don't want to snap anything!

You don't say which model of car it is. I have only done this on a Mk1 so it may be different on your car but here goes. The switch on mine was held in place by a metal strap that tightens around the steering column. It was released by loosening a bolt underneath that released the tension - rather like an oversized jubilee clip. Once the tension is released the switch unit just slid off easily.

Hope this helps.

All sorted now thanks! I really should stop doing car stuff in the dark!
No more annoying flat battery from the worn flash-to-pass mechanism!
I also took the wiper stalk off the old switch box and used it on the new one as the letters were less faded.

As always - Thanks Mazda Menders!

I'll bet the switch will clean up ok...sounds more like dirt gumming the contacts together.

You're probably right but at £5 for the new one I simply cannot be bothered :p.

I do seem to have a fair few mirrors collecting up...
Each time I go to see one that is getting broken I end up coming away with a lot more than I went for when the prices are so low they're laughable!

The switches do get worn and the springs get loose. The MX5 switches are very clunky and not very pleasant compared to most other cars so can suffer from wear.
We had to replace the switches in our track car due to the same wear. We found we were flashing the headlights when indicating which was a little annoying...

Sorry to re-animate an ancient thread, but I have the flashing whilst indicating problem; and a couple of other little things that may be tracked down to the steering column stalks.

Question: do I have to remove the steering wheel to get them off to clean and inspect?

Done cowling and all that in the past, but not the steering wheel. And it has an airbag steering wheel. Better do some reading up on how to do it then!

Sorry to revive this thread another time, I can't find anything regarding this online, did anyone ever figure out whether you can just replace this part or if you do have to replace the whole assembly?
If so how would you go about it?

Thanks :) I appreciate any help

Hi - ultimately I was a bit intimidated by the removal of the steering wheel and airbag to get to the stalk assembly etc; I just ploughed on with a dodgy indicator contact! So I can't really be of any help. It was in a queue of jobs that all got curtailed by ULEZ which means that the old MX5 is retired to the garage; only the mk3.75 on the road for the moment!

But m-m will know.
