VW Diesel Emmissions question

Postby GlennyGills » Fri Sep 25, 2015 12:26 pm

If VW are "cheating" on the emissions, does that mean that owners will have to pay more tax if the new emissions are in a higher tax bracket?

OR
Is this the fix VW will suggest ?

They have a long road to travel to sort all this mess out and I am sure it will not do them any favours, but if they are doing it ??????.M-m

As a VW owner this is a very interesting situation, however from what I can gather it only affects recent 1.6 and 2.0ltr diesels, if however its proved otherwise I will be asking for my money back pronto.

I've been away for a while with a funeral followed by a holiday so have not kept up to date with news.
I did see something about this but it was on a Spanish tv news program and I don't speak Spanish. Could someone please explain to me what the problem actually is?

Basically, VW have been caught by the American in cheating the emissions tests. They use software to detect that the car is under going an emissions test and switch to a temporary mode of running the engine to produce good emissions. The software apparently checks for things like steering wheel position etc. which are set as a standard under test. Having been found out, they have admitted to it and it turns out it is not just in the USA, but is Europe as well. It affects diesel 1.6 and 2.0L engines. (Don't know if it also affects SEATs and Skodas, etc.)

Oh, right, not as bad as I thought then. The reason I say that is, all manufacturers do similar on all cars anyway, diesel, petrol, LPG, just less obviously i.e. the software is set to optimise the emissions at the set RPMs that the tests are done at (idle and high idle I believe). 100RPM or so either side of those rev bands on the vast majority of cars will result in emissions very much different to the quoted values. Sounds like someone at VW has come up with a different solution, probably due to different emissions tests somewhere in the world that the "optimised rev band" method can't handle.

I now understand that BMW are also facing cheating charges. Apparently the indicators switch on and off under test conditions, but never in real world conditions.

As a double Audi owner (albeit petrol) I cannot believe that VAG Group are the only ones to do this. Just they are the ones to be caught. As far as I'm concerned diesel tax should be extortionate anyway. Nasty horrible dirty fuel but cheaper to tax than my MX. Ridiculous.

I have a Merc C220 CDI as well as my MX5. It seems to run very clean. I've never seen a cloud of black smoke from it like you do with a lot of diesels, particularly Fords and it always looks clean at idle. The exhaust pipes have very little soot on them (far less than my MX5 for example). Some of that might be down to it having a DPF. I know it will still be releasing some bad gasses (just like it's owner) but as it's currently averaging over 55mpg it really isn't that bad.

If you were going to ban some cars for their emissions, modified cars like my supercharged MX5 and older cars (like Mk2 MX5s and earlier) should be higher on the list because their emissions are a lot worse (hence the high tax bands).
