Wanted a bit of advice on metal turning lathes

Postby pollyanna » Tue May 20, 2014 7:02 pm

I am trying to make a decision as to which bench model metal turning lathe to buy. Being an amateur as far as lathes are concerned I am considering a variable speed type. Does anyone have any greater knowledge than me about lathes they may own or have owned. Anything to watch out for, or rubbish makes or even good makes. Any recommendations etc would be good. I do have a small 12"/ 300 mm lathe that I have learned how to turn metal on and now feel I would like something a little larger and more accurate.

Hi, FWIW I'd be looking for a Colchester or a Harrison as they're good quality and so long as you can inspect it first (assuming you're looking at used, not new!) you should get good kit for a reasonable price. When you say currently 12" I'm assuming you're talking bed length, not chuck!(?)
There are a few websites listing used models and quite a few dealers, I'll ask my BP whose sites he browses if you like?

In a previous life I used to run lathes (milling machines too). Mostly CNC but some manual too. As small as 4" right up to 24" chuck. The 24" chuck could hold 4 tons!
Also used a vertical lathe with a 6 foot chuck. That thing could hold something ridiculous like 20 tons!

I've never owned one though and have never used a hobby lathe so I can't help at all but just thought I'd mention it

Nice! I've never bought new  but then all our stuff is 36" plus. He recommends lathes.co.uk as your main start point, being specific Warco (http://www.warco.co.uk/2955-model-engineering-lathes) have a good rep, at sensible money, or if money is more free then maybe Schaublin (watch these models as some don't have feeds), or you might want to look at a bigger manual and/or + CNC machine maybe Emco?
