Roof Moss

Postby pollyanna » Thu Apr 10, 2014 10:39 pm

Hi, I am not sure if this this post is in the correct forum but , here goes. It is not about moss on the roof of cars.

It's about moss on the north side of a pantile bungalow. I have made a scraper attached to a pole to scrape off the lumps of moss, that seam to be growing furiously this year, so I am pleased about that. What I would like to know if there is anyone who knows of some chemical that is not dangerous and not too expensive that I could spray onto the roof to stop it growing again. I was once told that copper sulphate should do the job but I know very little about chemicals and any help would be appreciated. I don't want to have to to this job again before the grim reaper calls. :-)

Moss generally isn't a problem unless it blocks gutters...in fact it's a good extra layer of insulation. Regular gutter cleaning is necessary anyway, so you might like to just let it grow.

If not... Moss killer sprays work, but will need reapplying every year or two (or every month or two if the weather keeps going as it has been). The only reasonably permanent (but not cheap) way is to fix a strip of copper flashing along the ridge, using copper nails. The rainwater will react and cause a small amount of copper sulphate to wash down, which kills moss. You need to clear the roof first, then it should keep it at bay for a decade or two (when the copper will need to be replaced). If it's a long way from ridge to eaves, you might need a second strip halfway down...

If it's really bad, there may be no solution.

You'll need to clean off the roof & apply a anti fungicide solution to kill off all the spores. Once that's dry apply a sealer (brick water proffer) that's about the best you'll be able to do i'm afraid :handgestures-thumbup:
