puncture repair kit

Postby stevehh » Sat Mar 08, 2014 8:38 pm

I wandered into halfords today, and spotted the puncture repair kits.
Are these any good, they do seem very simple to use.

Well, I don't mind putting one in the boot. We'll have to wait until I get a puncture until I can test it :)

Always interesting option these kind of kits because you cant fit your punctured wheel in the boot. Plus save a fair amount of weight not carrying the spare wheel around all the time.

Let's hope you don't because it would be a lousy time to find out it was crap and have no spare....

I have seen them used before and they are excellent if your problem is a nail in the middle portion of the tyre. No good at all if you have a bigger hole, or one on a shoulder or wall, or a broken valve, a slash or split, or a blowout.

Crap as it is, at least the foam stuff covers you for more than one eventuality. Not many more, granted, but more worth having in the boot than a plug.

That said...I've had 1 puncture in 20 years driving, so I'm happy to suffer a little inconvenience waiting for breakdown if/when it ever happens again, rather than pay to lug around a spare wheel, or to buy puncture kits. I pay the breakdown policy regardless, so I might as well get something for my money! :-)

Fair point about the insurance Binary especially as I have had 5 in the last year and at least one ruined tyre to cost of £90. Do they fix it roadside or just get you home?

The last time I had a puncture was last year, it was a nail in the tyre in northern France. As it was a perfect 90 degree in nail, I left it in, and kept a watch on it. I went to a supermarket and bought a foam stuff can, in case it started to lose air, It's in French, but it covers my tyre sizes. When I got home, I had the tyre repaired.

I'm sure I won't always be so lucky, so I look out for any small tools I can pack.

In my experience, the AA took the tyre to the nearest fitter for me and brought it back fixed 20 minutes later and put it on. The only charge was the repair cost at the fitters, which was about £7 IIRC (or I guess they would charge you for a new tyre if that's required) - I can't vouch for the RAC or Green Flag. But they all measure themselves by 'x% fixed at the roadside' so they would probably avoid towing you if possible.

My mum always leaves her spare at home now too and recently had a puncture while she was in the next town...and the AA man took her home, picked up the spare, and popped it on for her! :-)

The risk to this approach is that you will be in the middle of nowhere and nobody is open, in which case it'll be whatever you're covered for...tow home, or to nearest garage, or whatever. But if I was headed into the middle of nowhere, I would take the spare with me. Just don't see the point in lugging all that weight around day in day out.

If I had a flat on a motorway I'd want the quickest repair possible which would be sticking on the spacesaver spare. It's not heavy enough to make any difference to day-today driving anyway.

What really sucks about changing wheels is usually you wont be able to squeeze your punctured wheel into the boot. So in the passenger seat it goes... Hopefully your passenger understands.

Sticking out of an open boot (assuming it's empty enough - it usually is) is fine with me as long as it gets me home.

I'd want the safest repair possible. Buggered if you'd catch me getting out on the motorway to fix a flat tyre. I'd be straight onto the men with the high-vis and the flashing lights to do it for me, free of charge, while I stand back out of the way. The motorway is quite literally the last place I'd be prepared to change a wheel.
