I had something happen the same to me in My own MK 2 V.S ,the sound stopped working on the head unit after moving it out to go back in, so i tried a number of bose head units with the same out come, i even changed the amp ,that was a pain to change and still no change, had a swap of relays and checked all fuses, still the same ,so i cut it out and just hard wired a aftermarket HU in and speakers including adding 4 x 4" speakers to the great OE windblocker so it now as a use that works....

We put these in because they fitted in well with the extra gauges that we also added and i was really shocked with the sound that came out of it for the price , it was spot on.... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Car-Stereo-De ... 1139772054

Wayne it sounds like a dockyard job. Did you have to completely bypass the wiring loom and everything to do with the inbuilt system? I can't imagine how I would start to run wires to speakers and anything else that needed connecting up. Couldn't you have used the existing speakers? Mine are Bose speakers in the doors and to be honest are quite good. Fitting aftermarket speakers is a science in itself as I imagine you have to have some sort of compatibility with the HU and any other equipment regarding power and impedance.
It might be easier to just try another HU and see as you did if it works. I might just be lucky. Their doesn't seem to be a simple 'fix' when it comes to electrical problems. Perhaps Halfords could sort it for me (at a cost). It might just save me going gaga!

I made up a patch lead to plug into the roadster side plug to power the unit without useing the built in amp, ( pulled the power to the amp at this point also) ran fresh wires from the HU straight into the drivers door to the new speaker as i could not find the speaker wire from the door in the loom of the cab on that side to join into, the passenger side was a better result as i just nipped and re joined the new wire from the HU to the loom from the door in the cab and just fitted a new speaker in that side also, i then ran wires to the rear from the head unit to the speakers in the windblocker i added them because i missed the sound behind me from jumping out of my MK 1 import to my MK 2 as they are fitted in the headrests in the MK 1 and with the roof down and on the motorway i can still here sound.
I must also add that the bose tweeters will not work without the amp so i swapped them for standard Mazda ones that were a straight fit.
Never looked back, soooooooooo much better :handgestures-thumbup:

I think the next move is to persevere and put the old Bose head unit back in. I do know that the radio worked fine on this and if it does not work then I will know that their is a problem beyond the Head Unit. This could be speaker associated or external amp if this is installed. Once again I am just assuming that their is one of these things lurking about somewhere.
If the Bose HU does work then it is more than likely that the internal amp in the HU is cooked. Sherlock Holmes I ain't but something has to give up its secret as to why this has happened. In the meantime if anyone can confirm the existence of an external amp I would be really pleased to know what it looks like and more importantly where it is situated. I think you said Wayne that it was difficult to change, perhaps you could steer me as to where it is just in case I need to get to it and check it out. Thanks buddy. :confusion-shrug:

It's behind the dash right at the back, at the bottom behind the heater controls.

Put the old Bose HU back in and it works fine, proving that the amp/s and speakers are OK. Took the adapter harness out and tested for continuity from plug to plug. Found the orange loop providing power to the speakers had lost continuity and when wiggled snapped off. Must have been a dry joint although up to a few weeks ago was working ok. I am hoping that this is the cause of the 'no sound' on the HU. Just got to find a way of looping from the blue wire to the pin providing power to the speakers.

SOUND RESTORED ON HEAD UNIT

Postby chadz » Mon Aug 18, 2014 3:31 pm

FIXED - IT WAS THE EXTRA LOOP TO THE PIN FEEDING THE SPEAKERS/AMP. MUST HAVE HAD A DRY JOINT, NO CONTINUITY.
REALLY PLEASED 'COS THIS HEAD UNIT IS REALLY COOL LOOKING AND HAS A HOST OF FEATURES THAT ONLY NORMALLY FEATURE ON MORE EXPENSIVE HU'S. :text-bravo:
