Seats defoaming - subwoofer out

Postby jass » Sun Feb 21, 2016 7:50 pm

Jass is now having an UK Eunos 1.6 limited 93 in a good body condition, an ex-OC car actually.

Long story short though - while doing some initial maintenance, I tried fitting in it, but without much success.
Defoamed the seats to the maximum, but its still very narrow and the reason is the build in subwoofer in the backrest I believe. The subwoofer adds up 4cm more, than a defoamed seat without such. Although the top of the seat is below my neck, I am going to keep if for a while, but the short question is - has someone already removed successfully the sub and the metal frame from such seat without damaging the covers or the seat structure even?

Should someone have/spot lotus elise S1 seats, I will be very grateful for a hint!:)

P.S. To keep the thread informative - here is manual I did for the defoaming

and creating more room in an MX5:

Don't ruin Mk1 seats with bass thumpers. They will sell well!

And S2 Elise seats are a LOT more comfortable than S1 seats. I've had both in mine.

I am with Lazza, the seats will sell better than standard, so sell the thumbers and get another set of seats, swap the backs over onto the new set of seats so they will be fine for selling and then the base you have already ripped apart like a Jack Russel on one you can do to the back support, covers on the back can be removed just as easy as the base Vlad.

OK, I have some update to this topic.
As earlier mentioned, the seats were professionally defoamed (cant believe someone has more experience in this than me) to the maximum, but look just like new.
Ordered a set of leather normal MK1 seats, that did not show up so just before Japfest and booked track time I had to make sure I can get in the car WITH helmet (and it was not possible without before this). Long story short - I managed to get the subwoofer out, that have 5-6 centimetre, which is enormous ( reversible installation is well possible however). The subwoofer moves out with the frame just by unbolting 4 screws, that hold the frame. The rear foam can/should be fully removed, while the front keeps the fabric tension (although I managed to remove extremely carefull 2/3 of the front as well.
And those seats turned out to be the most comfortable and supportive MX5 seats I have been in, as they are quite deep and provide excellent side support in both the upper and lower parts. With exception of the headrest - it stops just there, where my head starts.

Will keep them until I get convinced about other seats providing lower sitting position/better entry and will keep the later on as well in case I decide to sell her.

In the meantime I bought Sparco Sprints to discover they are far worse in any way than defoamed OEM seats. Before selling them again, optimized their position to the full maximum and made bolt on adapters for them. Just provided more information on Facebook (with pictures), but could copy them here as well if there is interest:

Also made bolt on adapters for the best seats I have experienced in an MX5 (for a nearly 2 meter tall of course), just in case I decide to go for them and have easy installation:
