I did the same on an old Rover P6 2000TC. The engine was very coked up,the valves had so much carbon build-up they were almost a perfect valve-plug, I had to chip it off with a chisel before cleaning them up, followed by the head ports & chamber, lapping in the valves then re-shimming the buckets. The casting was actually very good so no need for any smoothing. It's amazing really how bad the quality of fuel was back then compared to how clean it is now.
I really wish I'd kept that car. Traded it in for a 1985 Rover 216

I just needed something reliable and a 7 year old Rover 216 is a lot more reliable than a 25 year old P6. I really regret it now, it was a lovely car and I've never replaced it in my heart, not even the MX5 matches it for character.

I think we all have a car that we would like back/should never have parted with. I have two, a 1962/3 Austin Cambridge and a 1969 Mk1 Ford Escort with a 1300 half race engine and twin Dellorto carbs, by that were fast in its day and worth a lot of money now. Miss them both now.

Well the first head is ready for my brothers green mk1. I would have cleaned it up and painted it but hey ho, if he can't be bothered then I definitely cant. Lazy Ar**e.

Image

The Blocks cleaned off ready.
Image

Head gasket in place.
Image

The dowel holes in the head have lost the chamfer to help locate them. so ive put it back.

So it's back on.
Image

This one has to wait now untill the Blink cams arrive.

Onto the second head for my lads. Hopefully it won't take as long now. Although I've found that if I start with coarse tools to speed up the proccess I spend as much time cleaning up burr marks. :confusion-confused: I guess it's just a long labour intensive job without any short cuts.

Good work mate! Answered one of my questions to you on my build, sorry I wasn't paying attention!!

For the benefit of readers who are tempted to have a go themselves, there are benefits to having three-angle seats at this stage (or radius seats if you're feeling more flush) and if you're popping the head into a machine shop for a skim (advisable, few are true) it wouldn't be a lot more ££ to have the seats recut at the same time :handgestures-thumbup:

It's also useful to oil/wd40 the water galleries if you're tempted to get frisky with the grinding stone when porting and take more meat out of the head - the oil/wd will wisp up smoke of you get near the water passages and give you a warning to stop!

Benf .
What is two part foam on your other thread? For everyone's benefit of course.

As for my brothers cams they are part of a blink kit (piper re grind). I'll get back to you on that.
They probably will call them " Our secret superfast road/race cam profile" as most of these people do nowadays.

I was talking to my local machine shop about the 3 angle seat and he thought about 1% gain for the cut.
when porting I have opened out the seat and this also helped merge into the bowl and reduce that huge lip each head seams to have. It must be a fair restriction to flow.

That figure is probably about right, but it'll vary depending on how good the injectors are - minimising eddy currents helps more with good injectors and fuel pressure and it contributes more to a better/cleaner burn. Worth doing in my book!

Two-part foam is used to take a mould of the port shape (tricky on a 16v but doable if you have soft foam) so you can make sure they're all the same shape, and volume if you put them into water) although we may be getting a little bit deep on the techy front now!!!!!!!!!!

edit: this is the kind of foam http://www.mbfg.co.uk/foam-materials/foam-soft.html NOT the stuff that sets hard!! :laughing-rolling:

Sorry it might be confusing but I'm working on two cars and heads.

My lad Georges car.
-40 thou head skim, ported, port matched on inlet, valve de-shrouded, Slight work to valves, exhaust/inlet cam swap (2 exhaust cams) Skuzzle clock chipped ecu, De cat.

My brothers.
-40 thou head skim, ported, port matched on inlet, valve de-shrouded, Slight work to valves, piper fast road cams, Megasquirt, de-cat

So these arrived today for my brothers and will be fitted over the next week or so. The blink bit is a megasquirt.

And these are the cam details .
