Lubricating throttle cable

Postby chadz » Sun Oct 12, 2014 5:54 pm

Anybody know if it is possible to lubricate the throttle cable in situ? The throttle pedal on my mk2 is very hard to apply smoothly when first driving off in first. It seems to jerk forward causing a kangaroo effect acceleration. If it can't be lubricated in situ how difficult is it to remove it from the car?

Sounds like you need a new one, but i would also check the hinge on the pedal and the frame as thet can crack at the weakest point when the cable becomes stiff.

Thanks. The cable oiler looks like it belongs in a commercial garage. Very effective I'm sure but considering I may only use it once it is a bit over the top. I managed to spray some WD40 into the gap between the inner cable and outer cover using the fine extension tube that comes with the aerosol, also worked some LM grease onto the inner cable to cover the portion that goes into the outer cover. Gave the spring attached to the top of the accelerator pedal a good drenching in lube. Now its smooth as silk.
