Decent Cat Converter

Postby GlennyGills » Wed Mar 21, 2018 1:39 pm

Hi,
Just sent the car for MOT and advised that it had failed on emissions again. A new Cat was fitted in April last year and the car has only done max 2500 miles this year. But it failed.
The tester phoned me around 6:00pm and asked me to give it a good run at high revs to get the exhaust hot. After 10 miles of enthusiastic driving the exhaust smelt hot, but the CO reading was 0.4 and apparently the limit is 0.3.

It seems as if after having to get rid of the 19 year original cat, I will be replacing them every year at around £90 per time.

Does anyone know of a good quality replacement cat?

Thanks

Hi Wayne,
It was fitted by the Garage, I suspect a generic version. Fortunately, the garage got it changed under warranty so no cost. I do see many comments though indicating poor life for aftermarket Cats. Do you have a suggested brand?

The aftermarket cats are craptastic, thats why they are cheap, good for a years MOT and use... i either fit a good s/hand unit or de-cat and re fit the aftermarket cat 3-2 weeks before MOT, get her through and a clean ticket then remove and bang the de-cat back on....if it is all greased up should take all of 30 mins to change, so you are only useing it for MOT's..

Tried to get a second hand Cat, but difficult to buy. I must admit I did think of your alternative option.

Might also mean it is running rich and/or it has a misfire which is killing the cat. They don’t like unburnt fuel.

Lazza,
H/C analysis was OK once new CAT fitted - so don't think it is that.
