Seriously though, as long as it's not supercharged (which would put extra stress on the end of the crank) then it shouldn't be a problem at all. After all, they are over 20 years old now and most are still going strong so it's not like it's a weak-point.

Very good point Lazza. I only discovered recently when planning the water pump and cam belt change on my new (to me) MK1 that it was the Lightweight Sports Crank engine. I would defy anyone to feel a difference between the two when driving and as Lazza says, most are still going strong. We did the work on mine yesterday and also did the timing modification and now she is even better.

The moral - don't worry, drive it.

As I understand it there is no issue driving it, and no issue if knowledgeable mechanics work on it. The issue is when someone mistakenly uses the long nose torque figure when refitting the pulley on a short nose crank. Then problems (can) happen.

:bow-yellow:
But it is more down the that crank bolt being cracked when there is no need to to do a water pump and cam belt change , IF it needs cracking for the oil seal then a new crank shaft bolt needs to be used ( as it is a stretch bolt and as finished it's job) and check the woodruff key ,and it MOST be torqued up to the lower setting than the later setting, As many crack it like the later bolt and then re use it and torque it up to the later torque setting which well over stretched from what it should of been anyway which in turn fails and gives on crank shaft wear.
Just as a foot note it can happen to all versions if it as not been done correct, it is not just local the the SNC engines the LNC MK 1 2/2.5 can also die from this issue, but the SNC needs to be done with gentle hands and more thought.
