Knocking in reverse

Postby cjgreaves41 » Sat Mar 08, 2014 1:54 pm

Afternoon all,

Another week another unusual noise!

Noticed yesterday as I reversed slowly into the drive there was a repetative knocking noise (sounded like drivers side rear). It was only present when I'd been for a drive (ie warm) and got faster with wheel revolution. But only occoured in reverse.

Im asuming drive shaft joint or diff (glup!)?

Any tips on how to isolate the problem?

Cheers

Jack the back end up ( and chock the fronts ;0) ) and do some pushing ,shoving and rotating.

Was it a knock that you could feel through the steering wheel?

I've heard this before and it was a missing shim on a brake pad or slider maybe...brake related anyway. I'll see if I can find it again.

There is a known "issue" with the steering rack whereby it over-powers and feeds back on itself causing a knock on full-lock, sometimes forwards but usually much worse in reverse. I say "issue" in quotes as it's not actually a problem and there isn't anything to fix. Getting a full alignment often helps and it usually goes away with new tyres (until they get worn again).

Thanks guys.

I haven't had a chance to have a look yet. Need to try and get down there this week. I cant feel anything through the steering wheel and there is no whines or nasty noises when moving forwards. It had a full alignment from Roddisions about 2500 mile ago and new Toyos last week! Oddly I did wonder if putting new wheels and tyres on had done/dislodged something.

I considered brakes, pads are getting thin.

Thanks for the advise! I will let you know how I get on!

New tyres last week? Check that your wheel nuts are correctly tightened!

You beat me to it, and check the caliper and pads.

Don't worry! I checked the wheels first job when I heard it! They were tight!

It appears to be the pad moving about in the caliper. If I reverse with Hand brake on first click it doesn't make a sound. Pads and disks are past their best so will do a strip clean and new pads and discs are in order!

Thanks for the advise!

No have only noticed it in a straight line. I'm convinced its the pads moving. I videos it but its too large to upload to here!
