Tombstone (Dash) removal

Postby cjgreaves41 » Thu Feb 06, 2014 9:27 pm

Hi all,

Potentialy a stupid question....

I need to remove the tomb stone (dash centre section) from my 1993 Eunos. To do this I belive I have to remove the central vents. I've tried the 'string' method but gave up in fear of snapping some 21 year old plastic. Is there another way?

Or do I need to just man up?

Cheers

Just bend a wire coat hanger so it can thread through the vent & give it a good tug :handgestures-thumbup:

I once saw a guide that involved inserting a mini screwdriver or cut up bits of credit card at certain points around the vent to depress the clips and make it easier to pull them out... Damned if I can find it now but I'll have another look in the morning.

Sorry Royster but i really do not recommend useing wire for this, the damage that can be done to the thin fins of the ball vent is bad, a simple screw driver will do the trick. i'll get my lad to video how to remove one and post it up for you on here, the vents do need to be removed so you can get to the 2 x philips head screws.
This might help?.... viewtopic.php?f=117&t=2443

Ah...in your pictures you can see the retaining clips. In the guide I saw, they slipped a couple of thin bits of plastic down between the vent and the surround to depress those, then the vent pretty much fell out.

They didn't have aftermarket surrounds like those however...

Fair enough if there is a safer way of removing them but I've not had any trouble in the past

To be fair, I've done the loop of wire method...and it really does feel like you're about to break something, but they're pretty tough things.

A little video would be great. As I said I've tried the cord method and I swear the dash will give way before the vent!

I haven't seen one...but if you look at Wayne's pics....at 9 and 3 o'clock there are two clips. If you cut an old credit card (or similar) into strips and push it between the vent and the surround at those points, it pushes the clips back a bit to release them and then they're much easier to pull.

Few years ago nursingdave "helped" to remove my vents on my 2002 with some string, as I had droopy balls.
Being the great oaf he is, nearly pulled half the dash out and ended up breaking some of the vent holders.

Manned up! The credit card trick definitely helps! Reassembled everything that previously rattled with silicone grease. Now nothing rattles and the CD player stays where it should! Excellent!
