Diagnostic Tool

Postby jsparrow360 » Mon Jul 15, 2013 7:14 pm

Hi I am looking to buy a diagnostic tool to fit my UK MK1 1996.... I have the small box in the engine bay right hand side..... but there are many different plugs/cables
OBD/OBD2.... I know i can do this with a piece of wire to read the codes but i would like a piece of equipment that I would read and after fixing the fault reset
the code... I think some can be used to tune an engine aswell. Has anyone used these if so which are they good or bad
Thanks
Paul

OBD/OBD II was not fitted to a Mk1 and MK 2 models, the loop and led is the route to go with the Mk 1, Jon is your man on here.

There is no data link at all on these old ECU's so nothing like that is possible unfortunately. There is quite a lot you can do with the diagnostic box though, just with the LED and jumper type reader. My reader (available from Autolink, link on my website) is a beefed up version of the same, with a laminate containing the various procedures you can do.

I made one of these a couple of years back but I have never used it, it would be interesting to see if your fault code card is different to the list I have though! :text-goodpost:

It contains the fault codes for mk1 and mk2 cars, plus the ECU switch tests, the procedures for setting base idle and timing, and for testing the fan and fuel pump.
