Shift boot dilemma

Postby mk1divemaster » Tue Jul 09, 2013 1:11 pm

Hi folks,

Changed my gear shift oil and boots today , but whilst tightening the three bolts that secure the lower boot I sheared off the head on one of the bolts :-( will it be ok with just two of said bolts or can someone tell me how to get sheared bolt out so I can replace it ? :confusion-confused:

It's not going to blow up or anything, but it will leak hot gasses which will destroy your new boots in no time.

Broken stud removal is a bit of an art and everyone has their own favourite methods. I use these:

But you might have some luck with tapping a slot into the top with a fine chisel and using a screwdriver.

Just remember, they only need nipping up...no welly required. General rules:
If it's just holding something in place - nip it.
If it needs sealing - gently
If it takes forces - firmly
If the bolt is unusually fat - welly
