Help on annoying leak

Postby paggers » Sun Jun 16, 2013 10:04 pm

So, Saturday was the first time I have driven the new Roadster in the rain. Much to my annoyance I discovered that I have a leak. Water is coming from the seal where the driver's door meets the A pillar. It either runs down the seal or drips onto my right leg (the latter more so if I brake in which case I get a little shower of drops).

I have inspected the rubbers and seals on both door and A pillar and I cannot see any difference to those on the passenger side which does not leak.

To be clear this is not coming from the middle of the drivers' side window where there is a split in the soft top rubber strip. It is definitely coming from the A pillar to door join.

Has anyone had this problem before and can suggest what might be causing it?
Niall

Is the plastic cover on the nipple on the latch.

Also the front seal is actually also a drain, check that water that goes in the top comes out the bottom.

I assume you are talking about the soft-top latch here? I assume so but will check. So if it isn't then water is getting in along the front?

Updated: Checked and the nipple is seating fine. Looking along the edge where the soft top meets the top of the windscreen is it nice and tight on the driver's side and opens up to a 2-3mm gap at the passenger side end. So looks like I need to do a bit of adjustment anyway but the gap is on the passenger side which doesn't leak.

I have the same problem. My first port of call (if I remember to do it before the next rain!) is to check that the drain hole is clear at the top of the quarter light seal.

When it rains, the seal along the top of the door window seems to fill up. If I press the seal, water squidges out. Under braking it flows out the front end as you suggest. If I'm cornering while braking, I get a wet inside left leg .. a little embarrassing!!

Thanks Mark, I will double-check all of that. I'm assuming that when you say 'left leg' you mean 'right leg'? Or is your water coming out from above the screen somewhere?

Classic blocked door front seal/drain. Take the roof down, door closed and see if you can pour water into the top and it come out the bottom. If not it'll be either blocked, or pinched by the door. Try again with the door open to see which.

Well, the inside left is pretty close to the inside right, so I guess it's actually both legs! ;)

Good idea. I'll give that a go. Thanks.

I've found that if you have a shrunken vinyl roof, the bit of rubber along the door will fill up and deposit all the water on your leg the first time you move the car after some rain.

Checked all the drains and all seems to work fine if I pour water in. The one thing that may be a factor is that the driver's window currently finishes a little higher than it should do and may be interfering with the water flow in the drainage area. I can't really see how but I guess if I fix that at least it is one thing to eliminate.

Of course, if you park it uphill then the water won't drain until you start driving....but it should go out the door drain rather than into your lap. Does it all line up ok?

There are a number of reasons that the water can be getting in on the corners .i'll have a look at Blyton buddy.

My drain is also nice and clear and it's always parked on the flat at work (the car is generally either at work or in the garage), so I'll have to investigate this ...
