Accessory switch?

Postby Adamski » Fri May 31, 2013 10:43 pm

Hi Guys. my 1991 UK has three accessory switches to the right of the steering column. The one nearest the driver's door is the rear fog light, the centre one is the dashboard dimmer and the one nearest the steering column is a blank. I was surprised to find that plugged into the back of the blank is a wired connector. Does anyone know if this is the prewiring for an optional extra. Front fogs perhaps?
Cheers
Adam

The plug is black as per the photo below. I'm attempting to wire in some DRLs, as on my model if you wish to go sidelights only, the headlights pop up on Dim-dip setting as well (believe this was the regulations back in the late 80 / early 90's). So striving for the sidelights only look but then thought of these DRL's to be operated independently of the existing lights. Have got a spare OEM fog light switch so going to use that. I've wired up the lights as far back as the bonnet space. Going to use the switched feed that sits next to the diagnostics plug, so just need to feed wire back through to the dash now. Just surprised to find the pre-wiring there and wondered if I could make use of that? (although want to keep DRL lights fed independently of whether sidelights/ headlights are on)........

There is a relay that only the UK cars had that lifts the lights on sidelights, remove it and the lights will only lift on dip and main beam. I'm sure Wayne can tell you which relay it is and where to find it.

Thanks for the info Tangoman.... got as far as diconnecting a relay that stopped the dim dip lights but the headlamps still popped up on sidelights so put it back together. will be useful to know which one anyway, so that I can have the best of both options.
Have made progress with the independent wiring - found a switched live wire under the dash so making headway. Just need to find out which wire to go onto which connector on the switch - but have downloaded the wiring diagram elsewhere on here so hopefully I can work it out

I have three blanks here and was going to attempt to rewire my fog light switch to on I bought on ebay as the current one is awful you can see it in the attached pic. The switch I bought has a black back on it does that make a difference and is this an easy job?

It is the front fog light plug, the other half is in the engine bay on the drivers inner wing a two pin plug, which a extra loom attaches to to run on then to the loght units, its is far easier to get the ring pre wired kit, and attach it to the OE switch, i use these kits for all models...

Good stuff so fitting front fogs isn't to difficult, that is one for the future.... What lights do u use have seen a few different ones on here from LED to nice round spots which I think I prefer. Must watch out for a rear fog light switch to replace that orange thing on the centre console at some stage.

You have to be a bit of a contortionist to get your head under the dash. I found removing the one panel beneath the steering column helped a lot. Here's the finished LED DRLs in place and all wired up

Lights are down to a personal choice but we like these.......

Not over the top, not to big, bright enough to be seen.
Most use the LED jobbies now, sorry but i am not a lover of these roadsters with DRL's, they look like a after thought, it's a personal thing

Well at least I know what mine would look like being a silver Mk 1 like yours..... Though I think I might prefer spots rather than LEDs.
