Mk3 purchase

Postby John&Luke » Sun Jan 13, 2019 11:23 am

I blame Wayne for this!!!! As he always seems to be getting new MX5’s arriving :-D :-D :-D

I’m also working on the principle that ‘he who has more toys, is happier’ I’ve brought another MX5.

I know Mk3’s aren’t everyones cup of tea, but couldn’t say no. Bit of a distressed sale (owner just wanted it gone). We buy any .....com helped in the process by grossly undervaluing the car so I jumped in. I honestly can’t believe the low prices Mk3’s can fetch. Massive value IMO.

Met grey, 2.0,5 speed, LSD, with leather, 80k miles.

Just couldn't bear to see it go to waste. Plus the Mrs can smoke it around in the summer :auto-layrubber: (don’t trust her with my Mk1).

Needs a good clean, hood protecting, service, lowered springs, check alignment and that’s it I think.

Will post pictures when I pick her up.

So first jobs, oil, filter change and air filter, Done.

Limited Time at present but found an hour to polish the headlight covers with some 3M compound. First picture original state (13 years takes it toll) and 2nd photo after polishing.

Nice fleck in the early Galaxy Grey Mk3's, my OH had one for a few years and did look nice when detailed.

My Mk3 needs a bit of TLC. Oil and filter change done the next job was a nasty dent in the rear quarter panel above the rear light.

There are 15 shades of Galaxy Grey according to my mate’s paint supplier. Trying to blend in a spot repair was never going to be easy.

Paint done on rear quarters :-D

Next job to clean and proof the soft top. Decided to use Renovo products, seem to have a good write up.
Weather good for roof proofing this weekend. However, got sent the wrong cleaner  cleaner was for vinyl not mohair.

So came up with my own version of cleaner - Milton fluid and baby bath soap.

I’ve been looking at the fog light upgrade for my Grey 5. But then decided that some daytime running lights might be a useful addition. The MX5 Parts fog light/DRL’s look very good but at £150 it’s a pricey upgrade, so I decided to use the fog light blanking bezels and make my own.

First job to remove the bezels and drill a pilot hole in the centre.

Purchased some small Cree LED,s from a well know auction site. There about 22mm in diameter. There shown in the next picture

I then opened out the holes so the LED’s was a push fit from the back of the bezel.

Refitted the bezels and wired up using a piggy back fuse adaptor.

Finished job. Think it looks ok and a fun hours work.

Few months ago picked up an aftermarket front spoiler for the boys Mk3. Front end needed a repaint so have spent the past couple of weeks prep’ing and fitting the spoiler ready for paint. Photo’s below.
