So been working on two different parts of the car.

The first being to change out the Lamda sensor. The car's been running a bit rich, and I have a fault code indicating a Lamda fault. I have a spare replacement sensor so a simple job to swap out. Well that's what I thought yesterday. However, I ended up having to remove the downpipe to remove the sensor. And when I finally got it out (stillsons and a long bar) I find the thread is cross threaded. :(
Image

Not a pretty sight. So I'm thinking of a ÂŁ35 stainless downpipe from Fleabay???? anyone got any experience of these??????

The second job is a bit more of a interior mod. When in the USA this summer, I found some gauge holders for a Miata that can be fitted into the crash panel on the passengers side. The idea is you can have three gauges with the gauge holders angled towards the driver. See below. Nice mod I thought, functional and a bit different.
Image

As you can see I've cut all three holes and fitted one gauge pod.

Now for the problem, the actual fit of the original gauge pod (black one) IMO was poor. It didn't follow the crash pad contour that well and had a gap at the top and bottom as shown below
Image

Not happy with this I ended up re-profiling and filling one of the pods (grey one) so as to get a better fit.

The looks a much better fit IMO so my plan is to make a mould and reproduce the other 2 pods. Will have to wait and see how this works out.

In the meantime any advice of the exhaust downpipe would be welcome.

MM, yes I guess your right.

So in search of perfection I decided to try to reproduce my one good modified gauge pod. Very interesting process and have learnt a lot in doing so. :-D

It all started with making up a mould 'box' using my modified pod. (the buck)
Image

Then adding the mould material. Making sure there was no air bubbles caught on the 'buck' surface.
Image

A 24 hour wait and then the killer question, would I be able to remove the 'buck'??? Answer Yes
Image

So tonight, it was a matter of taking a casting from the mould. On the face of it a very successful project, actually made 3 new pods tonight as part of the learning process. The end result can be seen below:
LHS (in black) original pod, Middle (in white) MY NEW pod taken from my mould, RHS (in grey) modified pod I used as a 'buck' for my mould.
