1996 Uk spec Rebuild (we hope)

Postby John&Luke » Tue Jan 05, 2016 10:52 pm

So started my thread tonight.

The car in question is a 1996 1.6 Uk spec Roadster. I brought it as a non-runner hoping to rebuild her over the winter months.

Having rescued 'her' I got her back to the GSpeed man cave for some investigation and TLC.

Image
Image

+ve points; New battery, back and front wings pretty solid, dry boot, dry floor, new soft top, paint not bad (nose cose has faded some what), good tyres all round, upgraded shocks and springs, good stero and BLUE dash lights???

-ve points both sills have had a patch repair, drivers seat bloster worn, and the poor engine would start.

Initial investigations has shown water in the Cam galleries. Low compression 90, 60, 60, 110. An air leak test on No.1 results in bubbles in the radiator. My thoughts are HEAD GASKET.Image

So two options, replace the head as I think it would have been 'cooked' or replace the whole engine?? Anyone got a spare 1.6 engine close to Oxford ??

Immediate plan to to remove the head anyway and see what I have got.

More fun tomorrow night hopefully.

Any comments views advice very much welcome.

Thanks

John & Luke

If the head has gone?, i would not even mess, turn the old engine into a coffee table and just get a good s/hand engine for around a tonn and half and replace it job done and enjoy.
Better still fit a early LNC 1.6 engine which will give you extra ponies to your later spec detuned version any way.

So a little more work tonight in preparation for removing the head. Exhaust manifold off, cam belt off, rad out, bottom pulley off, inlet manifold off. All ready to start to remove the head.Image

Starting to look a bit bare in there. Will make cleaning the engine bay a bit easier.

Used a piece of spare card to retain all my bolts for future reference of where they go.
Image

Then hit the problem of the right size torx socket for the head bolts. Largest I have is E16. Could someone please confirm the correct size for the head bolts??? I assume its E18 :confusion-confused:

Thanks J&L

Well, not such a good day. Had a couple of hours free so managed to get to my unit and whipped the head off

Not a great sight. So its new engine time!!!
Image

So a couple of questions.

My car is a 1.6 96 Uk spec car, what engines can I use.

Obviously a UK spec engine, but what about an engine from a Eunos ??? is it a straight swop. Are there any engines that I should avoid??

Thanks in advance.

Only good thing today was Kylie!!!!Image

All the Mk 1 1.6 engines will fit, early LNC as more power, SNC as long as you know it is ok, 1.6 Auto engine is great when married up to a manual box, later spec 1.6 was detuned.

So from 1989>1991'ish 1.6 SNC will wok/1991 > 1993 1.6 LNC will work Jap spec or UK spec/ 1995 >1997 1.6 LNC uk spec will work but detuned .
If you can hear and see it running before being removed and handing cash over great or use a trusted breaker.

It was tuned to have more low down and mid range, so great when joined to a 5 spd manual, but this was only done with the MK 1 1.6 auto engine , none of the others.

M-m,

Wayne, I've be offered a 1.6 from a auto. I'm I correct in think this has a lower compression ratio that the manual hence the low range?

Assume its a straight swap + flywheel from my existing engine.

Thks

Yeah compression is lower, different pistons, rings and cam shafts, but lovely connected to a 5 spd box, straight swap.

Hi, quick update. Me and the boy managed to remove the old engine tonight. Now destined for the scrap pile.
Image

With the engine out quick inspection of the front subframe showed this to be in reasonable condition, mainly thanks to a historic old oil leak. Plan is to clean the subframe now the engine is out and remove any surface rust before painting it with POR15.

Image

Good news the old clutch looks to be in good condition so was planning to reuse rather than replace to save some pennies.

Not quite mate, only the UK spec 1.6 95-97 was detuned. The JDM 1.6 was always full power and never detuned.
