Fitting simple stripes

Postby nedski » Thu Sep 19, 2013 8:51 pm

If you like stripes, here are some photo's of mine being applied.
If you don't like stripes, here are some photo's of mine being applied.

A few tips-
measure and measure again. Then stand back and make sure your measurements are correct.
Use masking tape to help line up your stripe. Stand back and make sure its looking good to the eye.
Clean the whole area, any bits will show through.
Use soapy water to help slide the stripe around.
When its in the right place squeeze out the water with a erm flat squeegee.

Tape it straight

Heat the edges gently (not burn or melt) and form around edges. We cut around 5mm extra to wrap around.

Adding extra wording on top.

Same again tape and soapy water to help align.

Finished just about, need a little bit under number plate.

Tip
We cut the stripe in the body line in the bumpers and then carried on around. Otherwise the stipe heads off in wrong direction.

Looking good. However, when you wrote "We cut the stripe in the body line in the bumpers and then carried on around. Otherwise the stipe heads off in wrong direction" what did you mean by that? Probably being a bit thick but I didn't quite get it and as this is something I may end up doing on my Mk2 I'm interested in any and all tips I can get.

Just under half way up the body all around the car there is that crease.
Because of the curve of the body you can't carry on the straight parallel line without getting big creases in the vinyl.
So fit the stripe on the front bumper, and come down from the bonnet to that body crease (behind number plate when fitted),then cut/trim the stripe into that line. Then start the stripe again in that crease and carry on parallel around and down.

It's very difficult to lay 2 fat stripes parallel on a curved body, and if you force them too much they will crease. Also cut into and start again in the crease on the rear bumper.

The boot lid gave me a problem too. The stripe comes along the boot fine and then you bend around and down towards the bumper.
It immediately started to go wayward and crease. So I cut the vinyl 15mm ish down the boot lid and offered more stripe up underneath to carry on the stripe. Its more difficult to see any cut that way because the cut is facing down. You may need to cut and start the stripe again this way more on a mk2.

I can't help thinking I've now made it sound complicated. But basically with thick wide vinyl you can't do it in one go, you have to do it in sections. If anyone knows better please post as i'm only an amatuer.
good luck. :handgestures-thumbup:
