Aircon removal

Postby bob_drinks_beer » Tue Sep 03, 2013 11:26 pm

Hi all

My main reasons for taking it out are it doesn't work, its radiator is in front of the cars one, and it will save a bit of weight.

I was wondering if I can just take the pump, rad and associated pipework etc out from under the bonnet, and just blank off the pipes into the car? A). In case I ever decide to put it back in (highly unlikely but you never know)
B). Because I don't fancy taking the dash apart etc.
C). I'm quite lazy

Will doing that bugger up the heater or anything? I.e. do I need to swap parts out from a non AC car?

Cheers

Bob

Just remove it and there is no need just blank off anything, you will need to remove the cooling rad to get to the A/C rad and i would be surprised if all the pipe work in the engine bay all cracks as it should on all the joins, you will also need a new shorter belt for the P/S once the pump and bracket is also removed, as for the unit behind the glove box, that can also be removed and use the trunking from a UK spec Mx5.
I would give yourself a good half day to 3/4 at your own pace to get it all out and put back up and running again.
Spooky as i have just been around all mine last night and topped up all aircon on all mine. :handgestures-thumbup:

I could do with a new coolant rad anyway really so that will be coming out at some point whatever. I was planning to attack the aircon at the same time.
Is the unit behind the glove box accessible just by taking the glove box out? My main worry was having to take the dash out to get to everything. I'm not a fan of working with trim etc... It's one of the reasons my old car was stripped out lol

No need to remove the dash, but have a big swear box handy :handgestures-thumbup:

Got it all out yesterday, even the bit behind the glove box (evaporator?) wasn't that hard. :handgestures-thumbup:
Didn't manage to get the pipes out in one piece mind...
