Coilovers. Which and why?

Postby cjgreaves41 » Sat Jul 27, 2013 7:44 am

Hi All,

Im after some coilovers for my Mk1 Eunos 1.8. The current set up is getting on a bit and isnt suited to what I want the car for. Im not really looking to do any racing/ track days so am looking for a comfortable road set up.

Currenlty Im leaning towards the fixed length Gaz set up, with adjustable damping. (See below)

http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/fixed-height- ... -1924.html

Has anyone any experience of these? Or ideas on alternatives.

Also Ive had a quote to supply and fit from a garage, fitting and gemoetry set up £250?!?! Seems steep to me. What do you think? Their answer was that all the adjuster bolts will be seized and possibly require replacement.

Cheers

And how do they know this??? you would be looking at around £30 a corner to fit the dampers and maybe £80ish + for alignment, so not far out i guess.
Fitting the dampers yourself is not that hard and will save a big chunk of cash, plus you you can attack all the alignment bolts to get them freed up ready for alignment.
We can show you and talk you through it, as for the look, ride and comfort with a simple twist of a button, it needs to be meisters R's.

Im watchin a set of MK2 springs and dampers on the bay for £60 atm. I might just take a punt and sick thoese on for the time being. Just been out in it and I deffinately cant cope with it for a trip to the South coast in a couple of weeks!

Paul knows his stuff, so agree with what he would of seen, your sale ad is up buddy, we just have a rule of six posts, other forums have a lot more post to open up any for sale threads, Flea should have contacted you by P.M or e-mail?
Personally i like the Mk 2 dampers on the MK 1 for road use, but can you not attack the swap yourself and just pay for alignment, with having the spare Mx there it is a win for parts if needed.
We can help you with calls and info.

I'd suggest Meisters too. Not from experience, but from research as I was going to use them myself. I learned the general consensus was that gaz were okay/good on track, not so much on road (but bear in mind that the gaz is a control damper in the 5da series, so they have no choice). Nitron, ohlins, etc and of course protech ( ;-) ) are great for serious use, however both the former there are very much not cheap/budget options. The ohlins are remote reservoir units so they're particularly suited to enduro... But unless you drive hard from one side of the country to the other, or through Europe you'll not be needing those!! Lol

Thanks for the advise guys.

Thanks again MM for letting the add up for the other car. Really is needed to warrent spending money on the Eunos (man maths working its magic).

Going to attempt the change my self. Ive striped the spare car of its dampers / springs. Other than ridiculasly rusty bots its not that hard! ..... Famous last words!

I am pleased this question has been asked. I am likely going to replace mine next year..... but not having driven my 5 yet with the coilovers that are on I will see what I think first.

Love reading about this subject... there are just so many options out there.

Is £500 a decent enough budget to get a reasonable good setup?

The meisters will do everything you want for every condition of road/track use best of all worlds at a good price ,i would personally but them in the same par as teins or better for over half the price.

Did you fit the Mk2 shocks with the Mk2 top-mounts?

To add a bit of info to the discussion... According to Roddo who fits both setups, Meister R are 60% road and 40% track i.e. they are great on road while still being able to hack it on track. Gaz Gold Pro (which haven't been mentioned yet) are 40% road and 60% track i.e. they are great on track while still being decent on the road.

Another thing to consider is that GGP can be rebuilt and revalved. I'm not so sure Meister R can be.

That's quite interesting, especially about the rebuild option. Considering they are about the same price I may look again at the Gaz ones.

I'll find out, but i have seen quite a few GGP pop seals just out of warranty, and for that reason i will not use them myself .
