Fitting a lights left on alarm/buzzer to your Mx-5/Roadster

Postby Mazda Mender » Sun Feb 03, 2013 6:40 pm

Some do come with instructions to strip the wire back and remove fuses, shove the wire in the fuse box and push the fuse back in place, PLEASE throw them in the bin, I personally don't and have never liked this unsafe method of doing this, do it once and do it right first time safe and right.
This will work for any car.
So here is a quick how to...

First remove the side wall trim panel which is held in place by a trim clip at the top at the back and a spring clip to the body work behind it ,which just pulls free with a little pull. locate the wire that runs from the interior light door piller switch(Red and white on a Mk 1, but watch out has there are two of that colour make sure you get the correct one) this is a earth wire that runs to the pillor switch so the buzzer will buzz when the door is open and the side lights/head lights are on only

The black wire from the alarm/buzzer needs to be connected to this wire, you may need to add a extra foot of wire to the black wire, in the pic i have striped back the cover and attached ready for lead loading/soldering (please cover the soldered connection with plenty of electrical tape) , you can also use scotch/snap connections, but soldering is a more solid way of doing this.

Next the red wire needs to be connected to the illumination wire on one of the switches plugs,(Red and black on a Mk 1), strip back the wire cover a either lead load/solder or scotch/snap clip, a tip would be to trial fit first just to make sure that you have the correct interior pillar light switch wire before making it a permanent connection, (please cover the soldered connection with plenty of electrical tape)
Test by switching on the side lights/illumination, and the alarm/buzzer should work with the door open.

Should take between 20/30 minutes.
Any problems, just ask.

If you have found this guide to be useful, helpful or as helped you with your roadster with saving on garage costs , please consider making a donation to keep these gates open and available for others and so new info can still be added to carry on helping.

Hello Mazda Mender,

Thanks for this post. I'm going to try it too, having flattened my battery by leaving the side lights on. I think that I'm OK until the "Next the red wire needs to be connected to the illumination wire on one of the switches plugs" instruction. Where do I find one of the "Switches plugs" and the "illumination wire"?

Thanks, Ian.

I could also do with a clue as to were the illumination wire is for a MK2 ?? I seem to have the correct wire from the door switch, but there’s no plug anywhere near like the above photo. I’ve tried sticking the red wire in the back of most plugs under the dash, but can only get a door open alarm  , other than that I have bodged it into the headlight fuse which works ok, but is a bodge and I want it to work on the sidelights, so tried the 10/15 amp ‘tail’ fuse which seems to cover the sidelights and dash lights, but that didn’t work !!! I feel a right plonker, thought this would be dead easy :violin:

There are switches in the same position as the MK 1 on the MK 2/2.5's....I will take a couple of pics on with wire you need to connect to.

I’ve cracked it !!

Found a red/black in the same area as the red/white, which I presume feeds the rear lights, and it works a treat.

Cheers
