Time for a fluid change.

Postby blackyb » Fri Sep 23, 2022 10:45 pm

So, decided to change both the brake and clutch fluid before our annual tour of Scotland.

So, any tips or suggestions on undoing the bleed nipples to avoid snapping them off, been a few years since anywhere slackened off.

Just thought I would ask the collective.

On the brakes use a 1/4 drive ratchet with the right socket and play them loose and free, then you can use a ring spanner to bleed off.
As for the slave ,same thing ,but the space is tighter...
Once bled off blob some copper slip on the bleed nipples to help as protection for next time...
Just a foot note on the fluide ,even more so the brakes the only bit that really needs bleeding off are the calipers not the full system , that's where the moisture sits and air from heat and cold from braking, we recommend at every service time to check the braking system and bleed the calipers off, everything stays spot on.
So there is no need to bleed/ flush the whole system.

I treated myself to one of these induction rust busters, typical vendor like this

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/403480266093 ... YSEALw_wcB

I use it all the time on bolts that are open to the weather. The key is to heat the nut or bolt until it just turns red and switch off the rust buster for a 30 second rest. Then heat again for 15 seconds

This is to save overheating the rust buster also anything above a dull red on a steel nut or bolts changes the crystal structure of the nuts and bolts above 500 C and it loses strength as it gets red hot and also the usual trick of throwing water over it tends to form martensitic crystals that makes them brittle.

Especially on small diameter stuff like brake bleeding nipples, it is useful to buy an inexpensive 1/4" drive set of sockets on a rail off ebay not to loosen the nut but to increase its diameter to suit the coils that come with the rust buster as the minimum diameter of the coils is about 15 mm.

So, having secured the use of a full car lift today got the Eunos up in the air, wheels off and feared the worse.

Never in doubt, every bleed nipple came undone with minimal resistance. Brake fluid changed, didnt look dirty but it's been in there a few years. Clutch fluid was err dirty, bleed through till I got clean fluid coming out. All done.

Then I started on the wifes 2014 Fezza. Not going as well as on a 31yr old MX. Who puts steel bleed nipples into alloy rear piston blocks.
