There is so much crap out there on this subject for something so simple.....Yes if you press the A/C it should trigger both fans??? now that is all well and good "IF" your A/C works??? Or your pride and joy was built with it as most UK spec Mx-5's are not, or it has been removed from your Japanese import ???
How ever The MK1 NA can be bridged/looped from the diagnostic port, Now let me make this 100% clear "YOU CAN NOT DO THIS ON A MK 2/2.5 NB" regardless of the internet crap, they are wrong and will not help you solve a issue you are trying to resolve.
So onto how to test....
IGNITION OFF...
Tools needed...
1 x paper clip...
You do not need to remove anything for this, all you need to do is locate the temp sensor which is at the back of the engine under the coil packs, working from the passenger side( or drivers side for our Miata friends across the pond) unplug the triangle plug with 3 wires going to it 1x purple ,1 x red ,1 x black with red chaser..
Next get your paper clip you robbed from work and open it out to make a U shape, this will be our bridge/loop...
Insert the two ends of the paper clip into the ports of the plug of the black with red chaser and red wires....
Now put the key in the ignition and start the Roadster, the fan should run, if not it is fudged or the paper clip is not making a good bridge/loop turn off the Roadster and try it all over again, if it definitely does not kick in then yes it is dead.
Just a foot note.... the fans should draw air from the front through the rad or suck not push through from the engine bay...
As always any questions please feel free to ask, it is what we are here for...
