MK 1 Cooling fan upgrade/mod..

Postby Mazda Mender » Sun Jul 03, 2016 9:17 am

The cooling fan on the MK 1 has never been the most reliable, it is not very powerful and very often fails, either dead or become weak, a common upgrade is to fit a cooling fan from an Auto as they are bigger and have a more powerful motor , these are not easy to come by and they fail just like the manual version.

So a easy common sense upgrade/mod to a more powerful motor and a fan that is a bit more reliable is a MK 2/2.5 cooling fan, it is not a straight swap as the cage is different as is the plug connection, but a very practical mod...
First you need to get your hands on a MK 2/2.5 cooling fan with the motor plug and 4 " of loom with it which you will need to make up a patch lead, once you have removed the MK 1 fan from the Mx/Roadsters radiator, get the two fans together for the swap, should take 1hr to do the whole thing depending on how rusted those bottom holding bolts are to remove.
There is no need to remove the under tray to do this as you can get to the two 10mm holding bottom bolts by opening the flap that is held in place with a 8mm self tapper.

The differences......

Get the two cooling fans next to each other for the spanner attack....

We have started with the MK 1 fan first in this case, but it makes no difference, the MK 1 fan was dead so it was for the bin after this.

Turn the fan over with the motor up most and cut the plug and lead off as we will need this to make up a patch lead..

We are starting with the MK 1 cooling fan but makes no difference which way round you wish to start.
So now we need to take the two fans apart, which you will need a 1/4 ratchet, small extension bar and a 1/4 drive 8mm socket...

Now the MK 2 cooling fan, all the same as before as the MK 1 fan, 1/4 drive ratchet, small extension bar and 8mm socket, undo and remove the 8mm nut that holds the fan blades to the motor shaft, remove the blades ( we will be reusing them) ,remove the fan motor from the frame by the 3 x 8mm bolts (we will be re-using this) and then get rid of the frame as it is no longer needed ....

Re: MK 1 Cooling fan upgrade/mod..

So now we have two cooling fans in bits, time to put it all back together, so it is a faster ,stronger cooling fan for the Mk 1..

Get the MK 1 frame and turn it over to the back, you will see two places where the motor loom fits and holds fixed in place, we need to remove the centre most lugs at this point but leave the top most in place....

20160702_125929.jpg
20160702_125929.jpg (3.2 MiB) Viewed 4764 times

Removed....
This is important as the fan will sit off centre to the MK 1 motor and the electric motor connection will fall where these lugs are, so they need to be removed...

20160702_130027.jpg
20160702_130027.jpg (3.45 MiB) Viewed 4764 times

Now get the MK 2 motor fan and put in place on the MK 1 frame with the electric plug connection to the left hand side as you look at it, you may also notice that we have sprayed the motor satin black so it stays in keeping with the MK 1 once fitted , but not important to do.

20160702_131934.jpg
20160702_131934.jpg (4.45 MiB) Viewed 4764 times

Next fix the cooling fan motor in place again with the 3 x 8mm bolts,it makes no difference which 8 mm bolts you use as they are the same from both motors....

Now it is time to make up the patch lead, this is very simple, you could use a crimper and crimp connections for this but i like to make things a bit more solid and neater so in this guide we will be soldering up..

So we will need both connector plugs from the MK 1 and 2 with the wire/loom...
